Interesting newsgroup. Just started reading yesterday. (Because I've got the
hots for a watch...)
I've fallen in *LOVE* with the style of the TAG Heuer S-el series watch.
(See this URL for a picture...
http://www.tagheuer.com/share/main.cfm?sect=products ) From what I've read,
I should probably offer a disclaimer: I'm interested in a work of art, but
financially, can't affort the "luxury" of a fine mechanical watch. Thus I
guess I'm really after a piece of jewlery, that also happens to function as a
timepiece...
MY QUESTION: Anybody ever heard of the "Roven Dino" brand name? I found one
yesterday that looks exactly like the TAG, has the same weight and apparently
the same quality of the bracelet and the case (and crown, crystal, back,
etc.). The salesgal in the store said that Roven Dino is the actual
manufacturer of the bracelet that TAG uses. Anybody know if this is a true
statement?
AND ANOTHER QUESTION.... What about gold plating? The bracelet says it's got
a "5 micron" plating of 18K gold. My father-in-law says it's gonna wear off,
and I'm gonna be pist, and frustrated I got stainless and gold. Anybody got
any experience with this?
Thanks in advance for answering my (newbie) questions. If any of this is off
topic, let me know -- and if you can suggest a more appropriate forum, I'd
appreciate it!
Thanks agian,
Scott

Caveat emptor! [Buyer beware!]
Do a LOT more research before reaching for your wallet.
Yes, the Roven Dino site contains nothing. I looked there yesterday. I've
done quite a bit of research (or TRIED to) but have found nothing. So, I
thought I'd check here. The only other usenet reference I found was a scuba
diving site, and that was less than helpful.
I don't doubt that I could find a better quality watch for the money --
especially if I go with the 'pre-owned' (used) variety. I would, however, be
quite interested in your comment, Terry, 'guaranteeing' that I will find a
watch of "better...appearance". I've looked at numerous used watch sites in
my quest for info about the Tag S-el and its clones, but I have yet to see
anything that struck me as being better in appearance. What can I say?
Yuppie or not, I love that style. It's the part where the watch and the
bracelet come together that I think I like the best. I haven't seen anything
quite like it (other than the Roven Dino, and an ESQ, which I assume are
'clones').
Whaddya think about the Tag S-el WG5120? It's a mechanical watch. It has an
automatic movement, and is a certified chronometer. (But waaaaaay overpriced,
IMHO!)
Tomorrow, I'm going to some sort of warehouse my father-in-law told me about
that has $12 million in new/used/closeout/overstock/etc. watches. Dad
thought I could find a good mechanical watch for the $395 that the Roven Dino
close costs... We'll see!
