A friend of mine told me it's possible to use either a roofing nailer or
a staple nail gun for putting up vinyl siding. I realize the object is
to leave a gap between the nail head (or staple head) and the vinyl, but
he said this could be done by adjusting the depth of the nail set on
certain nailers.

Any advice on whether or not this is true, and recommendations on
roofing or staple guns would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Kevin

If you want to use a nail gun with vinyl siding then buy the new type of vinyl
siding like wolverines millenium . it has a different type of nailing flange
that is made to be nailed tight. I am sure otehr manufactures have the same
thing

If you get a coil roofing nailer that is depth adjustable, you should be
able to make it work. The guys I've seen that use staples adjust by holding
the gun at an angle, so one side of the staple drives flush and the other
not quite flush. Kind of a precarious hit and miss situation with the proper
angle.
If you are residing an existing home, I would try to make one of these
options work. I hand nailed my vinyl on 2x4 walls and every sheetrock nail
inside the hose popped from the hammer blows.
2x6 walls might be better, I don't know.
I'd opt for the coil nailer, if they are under driven, you can always give
them a few taps with a hammer.

Frankly, I don't know why you'd bother with a nail gun. You don't use
that many nails in vinyl and the nail gun won't save much time.

Yes Senco makes or did make an attachment for their 1/2"crown sheathing
stapler,I've had mine for about 15yrs. They work ok but like you stated the
use of air guns does not speed up the job any.
Basically just another (have to have) thing ya know.

Might not work , the gun needs a certain amount of pressure to function
correctly . SOME guns have an adjustment for set depth , some don't .
Usually guns for headed nails don't , while finish nailers usually do . I
have both , and this generalization is true for the ones I own . You might
be able to add a block of some sort on the safety that will space the nail
properly ...

You could give it a try but I probably wouldn't. A lot depends on what you are nailing into. I had a house with that masonite siding. It got a bad rap but a lot of the fault lay with using power nailers on it. When they missed the frame behind it, the nail would go way in. They didn't patch any of those. Many power nailers have depth adjustment. Problem is when what ever is behind it varies in strength you get varying depths. Even though the driver does not come out as far, the nail or staple still goes in farther if the material behind it is weak than if it is solid. If you have osb behind it and you only penetrate that then you might get more consistent results. The aforementioned house also had that impregnated fiberboard on most of the exterior walls and some osb on corners to strengthen. When you miss a framing board and all you hit is fiberboard you don't get much resistance at all.

While not rocket science, turning down the pressure is not the right
way to do it. You will get inconsistent depths. Better nail guns
have an adjustment to control the depth.

Rocket science has improved a lot since that question was asked back in
2001.

I have been trying to put vinyl siding on my rocket so that it looks
like just another house in my suburban neighborhood. Should I use a
pneumatic stapler?

There are special "vinyl siding nailer" adaptors for Stanley-Bostich
nailers for sure - suspect they are available for some other models as
well - or you can by specially built - SIDING NAILERS, of all
things!!!!

True, they are available now, but were they available in 2001? That's when
the guy wants to hang his siding.
