We want to put a hot tub on the deck, but we have septic tank for the house.
I heard that you need to put chemicals in the water in the hot-tub, and you
can't just dump that water on the lawn. I think it might just not good for the
septic system as well. Do anybody know how to solve this problem?

Thanks!

Maybe I'm missing something. Why do you want to dump hot tub water on
the lawn and what does that have to do with the septic tank?

You generally put a modest dose of chlorine in a hot tub (similar to
swimming pool maintanance). It's generally diluted enough not to harm
the lawn if a little get's splashed over the rim while you're
"frolicking about".

Now if you are planning to drain the entire hot tub into the sewage
drain going to the septic tank, than that's a bad idea. Septic
systems don't perfrom well with too much drain water. If I were to
drain a hot tub I'd wait unitil the chlorine concentration was way low
and just pump it onto a lawn, field, or street gutter, but not the
septic system. I don't believe hot tub water needs to be drained very
often if properly cared for.

You are correct, the chemicals would not be good for the septic tank.
However, the only reason to use chemicals is because you are not
draining the tub very often. Not very often means maybe once or twice
per year. I'm sure I've seen tubs that dump on the lawn, but perhaps
you have an unpaved drive or lane... Personally I think the lawn could
probably handle it. If the water would hurt grass, are you sure you
want to be sitting in it?

I am not an expert on the matter of chemicals, however, I do inspect swimming
pools. Swimming pool operators in this area backwash there filters on top of
the lawn or pipe to a drainage ditch. You may can run a hose pipe to an
existing ditch or provide a clean out to your septic tank. You may kill some
of the anaerobic bacteria in your tank but it is no worst than the chlorox you
use in your washing machine. Anaerobic bacteria will replenish itself in a few
days.

It is worse than the washing machine. The problem is QUANTITY. Kill
the bacteria in the tank, overload the tank with liquid, and saturate
the drain field. Not a really good idea. I won't say DON'T, but...

I would expect to keep the tub full for the season and a once a year dumping
on the lawn will not hurt anything.

I have a septic tank and a pool. When we need to drain the pool
I just hook up a pump and some sprinklers and water the grass. The pool has
30,000 gal. in it. This keeps the water from running down the slope and lets it
sink in.
