Hi,

Our bath has developed a leak where water is coming out of the overflow on
the bath. Its filling up the bath three times a day if we put the plug in.
Is there anything we can try before we get the plumber out on Monday?

Thanks

You might do better with a Priest than a plumber.
(nothing comes out of the drain, eh?)

you probably have a bath or something that is draining over this, like
on a second floor and the drain that the tub goes to is blocked so water
will try to get to the lowest place, gravity, and come out the overflow
and fill the tub......

Can't be. The tub only fills when he has a stopper in; which means the
bathtub drains; which means nothing would come in the overflow.
Its a troll that doesn't work.

This is not possible, as the overflow opening leads to the drain pipe. If
you are not making this up, post your question at www. plbg.com.

Right, here goes, sorry if some of the words or phrases are different, but
I'm from the UK. Basically, on the bathtub, we have a drain-type thing
about three-quarters of the way up to the taps where water goes if the water
level is too high. At the moment, water is coming out of this and into the
bathtub. If I put the stopper in, the bath fills, up to three times a day.
The water isn't going onto the floor or anywhere else.

If anyone can see where I'm coming from and can answer this question, that
would be great!

Thanks
Stewart

The illustration (of the new pvc assembly) about half way down this web page
will show you why what you are saying sounds like a Troll message.

Stewart,

probably not poltergeists (or trolls).

In the UK (where I am based :-) ) there are fittings where the overflow for
a toilet cistern can be plumbed into the bath waste instead of being lead
outside the house through the wall.
There is a fitting which joins onto the plumbing from the bath.

I would guess that:

(1) Your ball cock needs checking - possibly needs a new washer.

(2) Whoever installed the bath didn't connect it all up quite right. They
connected the WC cistern overflow to the bath overflow but didn't connect
the bath oveflow into the main bath waste pipe. This means in effect you
have no bath overflow.

So I would check your ballcock as a first step, and see if you can get under
the bath to look at the waste pipes as a second step.

It doesn't seem life threatening if you don't leave the bath running and
forget about it :-)

However you are wasting water (and paying if you are on a water meter) so
the cistern neds fixing a.s.a.p.

HTH
