I'll list my question first. The background as to how I got to the point of
asking this question is listed at the bottom of this post.

Question: How much resin should my water softener tank contain? How can I
determine what kind it is if I need to put more in? (Color of resin is amber
/ brown if that means anything).

On the side of the resin tank it says "Park International RT 940-8".
Another number close to that is 940-0284. The tank measures 40.5" tall,
measuring from the floor to the top lip of the tank. After removing valve
assembly and holding a clamp light up to the side, I have determined that
there is 25.5" of resin in the tank, again measuring from floor to resin
level. It seems that the tank is slightly over half full.

The only thing I know about the system is that the valve / timer assembly is
a Autotrol 255 with 440 clock timer. I was able to download a manual from
osmonics.com. The only other thing I have from the woman I bought this from
is a "sales flyer" which has written Autotrol 255 and 40,000.

When I had the valve off I flushed out any resin I could see and cleaned the
screen.

Thanks in advance for your help and insight!

** The background, my "newbie" experience, and stupidity is listed below: **

I just bought a water softener- for $25. Yes, I have the decimal in
the right place. A lady who has city water wanted to get rid of a
softener and said I could have it for $25 if I removed it and
reconnected the pipe.

I know *nothing* about softeners, other than this was a steal for only
being 2 years old. I brought it home on its side (read on here that
is a no-no).

Thought I'd drain the water out of the tank to make it lighter to lift
out of pickup truck when i got home. I saw some "rusty" water come
out.. only on closer inspection saw it was resin, and not rust.
Probably lost 2 cups? worth (kitchen measuring cups... don't know how
else to quantify).

When I saw this wasn't "rusty" water, I immediately set the tank
straight up and closed the valves.

What do I do now? (besides kick myself).

Do I flush out the remaining resin and refill with some i purchase
somewhere?

I have no idea what make the softener is, other than the valve type.
The only thing the lady gave me was a sales flyer that came with the
valve, no owner's manual.

We're moving the first week of July. Would like to have softener
ready to go when we move. (moving to country- water tastes okay, but
has some iron in it).

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!

-Dave

All softeners are set up on a cubic foot basis. Such as .25, .5, .75,
.9, 1, 1.25 etc.. That converts to grains of capacity based on the type
of resin and the 'salt' dose.

That's a Park 9" x 48" poly tank. Some companies will use that for a
1cuft softener, others, .75'.

You won't find the amount of resin in their manual, it only covers the
control valve. The 255 is the older 155 redone. Usually they do not come
with a safety brine system, a float controlled valve in a brine well in
the salt tank. The air check is on the right front and the brine line
attaches there. The drain line flow control is on the left rear and has
a number such as 9 imbossed on it, it is threaded and there is a rubber
ball behind it. You must depressurize before opening any thing on the
valve. The 255 is not going to like resin packed into it, your pouring
it out to get water out of the tank..... It may not be a problem since
you didn't pour that much. The 40,000 is 1.xx' of regular resin or 1' of
fine mesh resin or they're playing with the salt.

Screen.....? On the end of the plastic tube that goes from inside the
control to the bottom of the tank, or the injector screen? I can't
recall but I don't think resin can get to that screen, it's on the inlet
to the injector and water only flows when it's in brine and brine
refill.
