I tried a candelabra base bulb. Not the one. Tried several other types, too.

I think that type B must be a "bayonet" base.
The illustration on the socket shows a cylindrical bulb with a very short point
on the tip. The bulb base appears to be a smooth cylinder (no threads) with a
short "nub" at the center of the base.
This fits into a socket that is ~ 3/8" inside diameter. "E124037-1" is on a
label on the lamp base and on the socket. Does this refer to the bulb?
Tried searching through the suggestions offerred by other posters (whose help I
appreciate) but could find a match. But then, I don't really know exactly what
I'm looking for, as the bulb has been thrown away.

You were right. It is a candelabra base. The socket does have a thread in in,
but only one round. Very hard to see. The other bulb that I tried was too long
to fit inside the shade.
I wound up taking the lamp to a large lighting store, and one of their people
located a bulb that fit it.
