What can I put on picnic table legs to prevent rot?
The table will be sitting on the ground. It is not
made of treated wood.

I would use a 2 pronged approach. Take some polly sheet and form a bag
around the leg "feet" and pour it full of a water treatment product, let
it soak for a week or so. Then put the table on those round concrete
circles they sell at the home store. Once you get them leveled this will
make it a lot more stable anyway.

Fill four small tin cans with cuprinol insert the legs and let it sit for a
couple of days.

You can replace just the legs with pressure treated wood or place the
legs on 2" blocks.

You could apply a layer of epoxy. This will be durable enough to
withstand abrasion, and waterproof. It will soak into the endgrain
at the ends of the legs, and may take two or more applications to
achieve a good seal layer. Boatbuilders use epoxy to waterproof
wood, for the prevention of rot, as well as for it's structural
properties. Epoxy is the basis for many of the 'liquid wood'
products used to repair rotted wood.

It can be painted over, but will not allow stains to pentetrate.
If it wears out on the bottom, another layer can be applied over
to old stuff.
