Most insurance companies here won't let you do that anymore, at least not with
the toal amount. State Farm here, for instance, will only pay about 1/2 up
front, and the rest in a second check after the work is completed.
Furthermore, they won't pay any more than the actual cost of the repair. For
instance if they say they will give you $4,000 for the roof (after deductible),
they used to pay you the money upfront, and if you could find someone to fix it
cheaper, then so be it. Now they would pay you $2000 initially, and if you
find someone to fix it for $3800, then the insurance company will only give you
$1800 in the second check even though they had allowed up to $4000. They give
you 2 years to do the repairs. They are moving all policies, at least in this
state-Texas, to those requirements as they come due. They also moved
everyone's deductible up to 1%. However, I haven't noticed any drop in premium
for all these examples of less coverage.. :(
