I'm buying a new house this month, and I've been taking some
window measurements so I can buy at least some of the blinds
before the day that I actually close and start moving in.

My question for anyone who has had experience with this is
if my window measures a tight 31 inches wide, are 31 inch wide
blinds likely to fit in the window? ...are they actually just a
little more narrow than 31", or should I drop back to a 30 inch
blind?

If you are buying mini-blinds off the shelf, most of the 31 inch have
a range that goes from 30 3/4 to 31 1/2. There is usually a size
range posted on the packaging.

It depends; if you buy ready blinds, take a tape measure along
and measure the width of the Mechanism (if inside mounting). If outside
mounting, an inch or so should be fine.

If you're ordering custom blinds, they suggest some clearance either
side, usually a quarter of an inch each side.

To learn how to measure for blinds and shades there's a page devoted
to it on our No Brainer site at:
http://www.nobrainerblinds.com/install.html

The page also includes info about sill depths needed for a flush mount
and the minimum depth necessary just to install them........ and a
shade/blind "stacking" chart, too.
