We are having our entire townhouse repainted, and had asked the
contractor to use Benjamin Moore paint. He decided, without telling
us, to have our color choices custom mixed using California brand
paint. I am not familiar with this paint- is anyone else familiar
with this brand? How does it compare to Benjamin Moore?

Howdy,
I don't know how Cal. compares to BM.
But if your contract with this painter specifyed BM, then BM should have been
used.Hope you haven't payed in full yet.

They seem to be a regional company, available only in certain states
(ironically, not California). Who knows? I doubt they're better than
Benjamin Moore. http://www.californiapaints.com

You may have gotten ripped-off, but don't be too quick to assume
that.

In a city where I used to live there was a local/regional paint
company that many of the local painting contractors preferred to
use. I don't know whether this company actually manufactured the
paint from scratch, but I do know it had an excellent reputation for
both quality and service.

Ask around. (Which you're doing.)

Anyway, California MAY be a good brand but it's certainly not going to
be better than Benjamin Moore. Was it in writing to use Benjamin Moore?
If not, you probably don't have much recourse.

It's too bad people in the trades, even skilled and honest ones,
communicate with customers so poorly.

I'd make them redo it with the contracted for paint.

I've used California paint because I liked their color section better
then BM. However, California also runs about $5 less per gallon in my
neck of the woods (NJ), so maybe your contractor is charging you for
BM and giving you California?

I think California runs about $22 per gallon vs. BM which is around
$27 per gallon here.

california paint is decent, and ben moore isn't all it's cracked up to be. If
you are happy with the results, and it looks nice I would leave well enough
alone. There are certainly paints out there better than both, but price
difference on those two isn't all that much. Anyway..let's not get into
another paint discussion, I dont' think I could handle all that excitement.

As former painting contractor house flipper Hands down California paint is one of the best out there.Durability colours are much truer ,the price point is a bit more but I found it spreads better coverage wise value is everything.
As well as general satisfaction.

No I not been paid to say this but used a.lot of different paints and these are some the best.

It's common where I live, in MA. I've never thought
much of it. The water base seemed thin when I
tried it, and they didn't have any oil paints. They
may make it, but no one carried it.

I tell people that while 8.5X11 paper is standard in US, the UK has to
use 8.5X14 because of all the extraneous vowels used there.

The standard "letter" size paper in the UK is 8.27" x 11.69", slightly
larger than the US letter size. Both are standard sizes used in
printer software and in most domestic printers.

True, but I don't actually use that size.
