Best wood choice for interior threshold

at the door threshold. What is a fairly durable wood to use? I need to
be able to stain and shape without having to purchase expensive router
bits.

You can buy transitions at the box store, already stained and finished. Take
a piece of left-over tile and a piece of laminate with you to make sure the
transition piece works with those two floorings.

You may be able to buy a pre-made transition piece at a home store or
flooring store.
Most are made from hardwood like oak but if you are using hand tools to
shape it, pine may be easier and will still last many years. If you want
medium to dark, consider cherry or walnut.
If you buy a wood you like you won't have to stain it, just let the natural
color stand out. If you put a protective finish on it, the wood will last
forever as long as you keep the finish intact.

I probably would go for oak or cherry, but it really depends on what
color the laminate is what would look best, and also are you looking for
a contrast or a close match to the laminate.
