A co-worker is getting ready to paint his house. He is considering
buying/renting a power washer. It would be just him and his neighbor (both
rookie painters)

I was looking for a couple of pieces of advice. Is it better to rent or
buy a power washer? What is a good brand (purchase or rent)?

Lastly, the oft asked, what is the best brand of primer/paint to use? They
have a mold problem on one side of the house and any suggestions for that
would be greatly appreciated.

1. What kind of siding?
2. Power washing can be a very bad thing in the hands of newbies. It
can destroy wood and drive water deep into the inner walls which can
create major problems. It's also not too effective at killing
mold/mildew.
3. Consider forgoing the power washer and use Jomax, bleach and water
(garden hose presssure is all you need). For tough spots, a long
handled brush helps.
4. You won't go wrong with the top paint lineup from any of the major
paint manufacturers such as Sherwin, Pratt, or Benjamin Moore. Buy
the paint at a real paint store and they'll help you pick the right
products/primers depending on the surface. (you didn't supply that
info in your post)
5. Extra doses of mildewcides can be added to paint. Check with the
paint store. (Keep in mind that paint won't kill the mildew. The
problem must be fixed PRIOR to any priming/painting.)

The rental store will advise you on the proper pressure washer to use. They
will have one that will do the job. That's what they are in business for.
There are anti fungal additives that you can put in paint to help with the
fungus. The paint store will have that. You also might consider renting an
airless spray gun. Spraying goes a lot faster than brushing. You need to
tape it off better and be careful not to over spray on to the neighbors car.
I done two houses with a brush and one with a sprayer. Spraying is much
easier. I like Sherman Williams paint but there are other good paints out
there. Invest in good paint. It isn't that much in the scheme of things.
Your locan paint store sales person can give you lots of pointers.

I hope you see this post. I have just pressure washed my home and I couldn't
be more pleased. At first I was afraid of the pressure washer, but after
practicing on my shed I got the feel for it. I used a garden pump sprayer to
put a bleach and water mixture on the house to remove all mildew. I then
power washed with a washer I purchased at Home Depot for $495. I thought
about renting but am glad I purchased , I believe if I power wash my home
each spring, I can preserve this paint job for years. By the way all the
painters I have asked about paint say Sherwin Williams Duration, it runs
from $34-$40 per GL. which is only $10. more than the other premium paints.
Good luck
