Is there any reason that I should use joist hangers for attaching the
stringers on the fence I am building?

It is a 6 ft. fence with 4x4 pressure treated posts and pressure treated
stringers. I have a framing nail gun and plenty of galvanized nails. I
don't see any reason that I *need* to use joist hangers. Should I use them
for some reason?

I notched the posts about 1/2" for the stringers to set into when I replaced
my fence.

Well It is likely to last longer be more stable and easier to put up
with the hangers.

You don't need them. I drive a nail or two to temporarily position the
stringer then use a pocket screw to fasten stringers to posts, i.e.
"toenail" a deck screw at least 2" into the post, top and bottom.
