I'd like to get some storm windows for our Anderson windows. We have
mostly double hung and one casement that I'd like to winterize a bit
more. We have the screens with the little latches that snap into the
outside part of the window. I checked on the Anderson window web site
in hopes of finding information on whether or not they have storm
windows that can be used in place of their screens. I had no luck.

I haven't checked at HD or Lowe's yet. Who may have them?

We recently replaced a large number of windows in our home with Anderson
double-hung windows, having replaced a few earlier with another brand. In
all cases, the units replaced the original double hung models on our 40 year
old split located in central NJ. In my experience, and that of my many
neighbors who have also replaced windows, the storms go into the trash with
the old windows, since the just aren't necessary anymore. The exterior of
the windows are all "maintenance-free", and the double-pane glazing makes
the storms kind of pointless. In fact, I believe the manufacturers do not
recommend storm windows in these circumstances.

YMMV.

When I looked into storms for our AndersEn casements about 25 years ago,
Andersen didn't make them. I've since found that they are unnecessary
-- that 90% air leakage is really around the outside of the window
frames, not through the window seals. Removing the inside casings and
injecting Daptex low-expansion foam around the window frames eliminated
all detectable drafts.

Are these windows single glazed Anderson double-hung windows with levers on
the inside that need to be pulled down to move the windows? If so, I found
no storms available from Anderson for them... I am making wooden storms
(mortise and tennon joinery, with a mullion, and glass puttied in). I just
couldn't stand to replace the ugly, worn out, triple-track storms with new
ones... The ones I found at places like Lowe's, Home Depot, etc., were too
ugly and didn't work any better than the old ones!

I have three windows completed and hung--where the old triple tracks were
non-functional. I have 8 other frames assembled and ready for paint and
glazing. It's a fun little project, they look great, and are more energy
efficient that aluminum triple tracks.

I know exactly what you mean. I haven't checked HD or Lowe's either but found this site you may be interested in: https://www.windowinserts.com/
If I can't find anything at the home improvement stores I might give these a try.

When I worked for the window company we handled a magnetic add-on
storm window product that fit inside. We installed it in the Fergus
Market building (an old factory in Fergus Ontario) to add insulation
value for heating and cooling as well as reducing noise coming through
the windows into the office space. They worked very well. They were
acrylic with nylon or abs frames with magnetic strips molded in - we
just had to install stripping for the magnets to grab onto, and pop
them in. My dad and I installed 30+ in one Saturday afternoon.

You should check again. The web has grown a lot in the last 14 years.

Why are you responding to a post from 2001?

I bet you're a google goper, groping around

He's a spammer! Isn't that pretty obvious. Spammers always think they can add
their SPAM to any semi relevant post they can dig up, no matter how old it is,
and noone will figure out what they are doing. They are so clueless.

I have same type of windows and would like to find a outside storm window like the screens but with Plexiglas. It does make a difference. I've been putting shrink wrap window coverings on my screens. I have 2 living room windows next to each other. During a hard cold winter one of the shrink wraps tore off. The one without shrink wrap had a lot more inside condensation and it even froze the water on the window. That sold me. I definitely shrink wrap my windows from now on but it's a pain every Fall.

(Yes, I know this thread is many years old.)

You need new windows.

You also need to reduce the amount of moisture in your house.

WE purchased Andersen double hung, double pane windows for our house. We also purchased the Andersen storm window combination that is mounted in the windows, rather than on the house. This made our windows triple glaze and saved us a whole lot of money heating our house and kept the inside windows warmer, therefore helping hold the heat in. They are worth the price!!
