hi there -
I am looking to remove two large metal clothesline poles from my
yard. I am assuming they are deep into the ground and cemented in
place, but i'm not really sure. does anyone have any suggestions? I
could also cuse a tip on how to uproot a tree. thanks!!

Do you have a friend that farms? This is a common chore in the country. Post
pullers are found in places like Northern Tool. Of course you could cobble
together a puller from scraps of pipe or old beams, etc. Digging out around the
periphery to a 2or 3 foot depth will get most of the underground stuff, same as
with the tree. If the price is OK you rent the small Bobcat with a back hoe.
Lots of fun to play with. You'll have everybody in the neighborhood over
watching you.

when it was time to take the two up in our old house back hard, i just
dug a hole next to the pole(it was down about three feet. i think the
hole i dug was 2 feet?? its been years ago and i then put a chain on the
back of the car trailer hitch and the other end of chain to the top of
pole and pulled about 10 times to get it to move, after about 2 or 3
week ends i got it to fall and then broke off the concrete then threw
them away.....

Saturate the ground with water, good and soggy. It will be easy to push over
and out. I have done the same to a 60 foot row of hedges that I wanted
removed. It helps if you wait till after a rain.

Wear a helmet ! If that chain slips off and pops through the rear
window . . . . . . .

Then a helmet won't be nearly enough. Use a nylon towing strap. Much safer.

Exactly backwards.
A chain has no give.... no stretch. If it slips, nothing happens.
A nylon strap stretches. Just like a giant rubber band. and it snaps back if it
breaks or slips free.

Although, for pulling up a post, just dig down beside it, loosen it up, wrap a
rope around it, and pull straight up.

Lash a chain around it and pop it out with an old bumper jack.
