OT Why does Russia announce when they retreat from Unkranian areas?
Since when to warring armies announce retreats? What usually happens is
the other side announces their victories, and mayyybe there is some
press around to announce it, but that's not what the news says, that
some press person is announcing it. They say Russia has.

Also Ambassador nnnnn is having his face and voice imitated on zoom
calls, but I couldn't get details. ????

I forget which city it was. Putin was announcing that the city had been annexed while the
Russian military was leaving.

Alas, "Baghdad Bob" (Muhammad [Saeed] al-Sahhaf) has faded from
public view. Supposedly still alive at age 85, but I couldn't
find any English language references to him any recent time.

This part is sepearate from the first part. A two minute interview on
the radio where someone whose name was probably given at the beginning
when I wasn't listenting and should have been given at the end

I understand why he and the Russians woudl want to announce the
annexation, but on more than one occasion they've announced retreats or
moving troops to another area. Since when do armies do this? It seems
counter-productive from their pov.

Lyman, a charming town of 20,000. It is a railway junction but how
important is open to question. It's also 85% ethnic Ukrainians so it
might be a lot more trouble that it's worth as disgruntled Ukes sabotage
the rolling stock.

It is face saving. When the whole world knows
your got your sorry ass kicked, you turn around and
say "I meant to do that".

They did the same thing when they got their asses
kicked on way to Kiev.

How do you know it's a "charming" town, blabbermouth? Or did you only want
to write another flowery, "special" sentence for your enthused readership on
Usenet? <BG>

I don't recall them ever doing that and I do check the news every day.

Not really, the opposition would have noticed that they did that.

Neither of those are the russians announcing a retreat.

I discount almost all statements with vulgarities in them. If people
have a point to make and they can't make it with polite language, they
don't understand the world very well.

My experience too.

Although I did try to locate a Russian news outlet

I'm pretty sure the British let their people know about Dunkirk right after that
retreat. Biden let Americans know about his hasty, badly mismanaged retreat
from Afghanistan, even as it was happening, so your premise is incorrect. The
reason the Russians are doing it is the same, the people know it's happening,
both from the world news and from soldiers involved, so the Russians think it's
better to have a story and get it out and try to make it look better.

Not in the announce sense tho, more how well they did that.

They certainly didnt announce the retreat to the coast before
they to use lots of small boats to get back across the channel.

> Biden let Americans know about his hasty, badly mismanaged retreat

Again, that wasnt ANNOUNCED.

> so your premise is incorrect. The
> reason the Russians are doing it is the same,

No they are not, JUST admitting that they have retreated
after that has been reported by others.
