Our house:
2.5 bathrooms.
2 adults and 6yr old.

Our well water:
Iron: 0.35
PH: 6.2
hardness: 22
Copper: 11
Total Disolved Stuff & Minerals: 510

I have a septic tank.

I am planning to replace my water softener and also get a neutralizer.

I plan to avoid the Culligan guy I had talked to last week.

My current softener had its timer/controller replaced 2 months
back(Autotrol 440).

The PortaSoft water guy, said that the Autotrol 440 could be reused.
I was wondering if it is possible/recommended to use this controller
on the water neutralizer I was planning to get and get a Fleck
controller for the replacement softener unit.

I heard that due to the design, Fleck controllers are more durable
than the Autotrol. Where would it provide more value, with the
Softener unit or the neutralizer ? Or are controllers for softeners
different from that for neutralizers ?

Thanks for any responses

AN filters use heavy mineral so you need a control that will be able to
provide proper backwash flow rates. Softener controls (Autotrol 155/255)
that are specially rigged to work on a filter of that kind aren't a good
choice IMO. So I suggest you use the softener valve on the softener or
discard it and go with Fleck (2510, 5000) on the AN filter and Fleck
metered (5600. 6600 or 6700) on the softener.

Specifically what did he say you should do?

Thanks...

The latest guy I am talking with (Aquatech, NJ. in business since
1986), who I am leaning to go with, seems very against the Fleck for
the AN and was recommending the Autotrol 163.

His Recommendations (over the phone, using tests by previous dealers.
Will come and do tests, if I give the go-ahead):

Softener
My existing Autotrol 440
948 spun fibglass tank.
32000 grain.
c2491 resin

AN
Autotrol 163
1054 spun fibreglass tank
calcite(Georgia Marble)

He was also recommending a Hydratech RO system (how do they measure
up?)

Thanks for all your comments Gary.

You're welcome. The 163 is now the 263 I think but... they have to have
the auxiliary drain option or you won't get as good backwash flow rates
as with the Fleck IMO. Does the AN tank have the top dome hole? If not
you'll have to remove the control valve to add mineral. You present
valve is a 155 or 255 with a 440 timer.

Why he would be against Fleck is beyond me but there are many
plumbers/drillers/dealers that swear by Autotrol. I'm only one of three
in my area that use Fleck. We tend to sell more equipment than all the
rest combined but... I think it's what they 'grew' up with and/or 'cuz
they cost less. It certainly isn't because of their larger number of
wearable parts, or longevity or ease to work on etc...

The latest guy said something about the distributer in his softener
and recommended that I go with a 45000 unit rather thatn a 32000 unit.
This would regenerate fewer times and would use less salt.

He was willing to reuse my current Autotrol 255/440. He even
recommended that I use a resin cleaner on my existing softener. That
way I could save some money. Later if it did not work out he could
put a new softener(45K) in.

He was willing to go with the Fleck 2510 on the AN system.

He felt that I had to do a CO2 test, which he would do tommorrow.

His RO system was a Vertex. Not much info on the net.

Something? What was it? When people tell you something you need to
understand what they mean, so if you don't, ask for clarification. I'm
not in favor of oversizing softeners.

Good idea, he can also replace the resin later if need be. I think I
suggested that a while ago.

I like Microline and KISS ROs.
