It is mostly about shot placement. More than likely the ones shot with
the 9 mm are nonexpanding bullets and no vital spots are hit will
survive . With expanding bullets there seems to be very little
difference in the reasonable calibers (9mm, 40 S&W, 45 ACP) .
I worked with a man that in WW2 was shot with one of the German
submachine guns probably in 9mm. He had the scars across his chest in 3
or 4 places where the bullets went in. Being nonexpanding (FMJ) they
did very little damage due to where they hit him.
Had they been the more modern bullets he probably would not have
survived.
