Jack:
I don't know what the exact climatic conditions are where you are in LA, but
we live in South Florida with lots of humidity. After hurricane Andrew, we
had replaced the masonite siding on the upstairs (there is a class action
lawsuit against the Masonite Corp. for serious rotting problems) with 3/4
lapboard pine. I really got tired of painting and repairing it, so we opted
for vinyl-clad aluminum siding. The reason that we chose this over straight
vinyl is that the aluminum is more rigid and tends to cover up a multitude
of sins such as warping in the walls and irregularities that vinyl would end
up conforming to. I'm glad we made the choice. A neighbor in our
development got the vinyl stuff and during certain times of the day, it
looks terrible because of the flaws in the original gable wall construction.
If you go for what we did, be prepared that it isn't cheap. The upside is
that the product we bought is warranted by Alcoa for 50 years against fading
and peeling. AND, this warranty is transferrable to anyone who buys the
house. It was well worth the $6,500 that it cost.
As far as classic colors: most paint manufacturers have classic and
colonial paint ensembles. Check your local paint store. It may also be
worth your while (if you are really into painting and decorating) to invest
about 10 bucks and buy the complete fan charts. We bought it from Benjamin
Moore and it has become an invaluable tool in choosing colors.
Hope my info has helped.

Improved Resale Value. A home that has been inspected by Stucco Pro and
clearly shows that the home is dry will have a substantially higher
resale value.
Some Stucco homeowners have had to substantially discount the value of
their homes at the time of sale because of high moisture readings. If a
$250,000 home is discounted 10% due to moisture problems, that equates
to $25,000 that is lost at the time of the sale. This can be
substantially avoided by testing and moisture controlling your home
now. MoistureScan™ provides you with the information you need to
protect your house and help maintain your home's value.
Avoid Expensive Repairs. By moisture testing and moisture protecting
your home, you can avoid costly future repairs. If moisture is stopped
from entering your walls, the risk of further damage will be
eliminated. You may not see problems with your Stucco now, but if
moisture is getting into your walls, it will eventually cause the wood
to rot. Repairing rotted structural wood can be very expensive, and can
almost always be avoided by testing and sealing your home. Again, a
relatively small investment now could save you thousands of dollars in
repairs later.
