Thought I would throw this out to the group. Have found this above company on
the web which carpet can be ordered directly from them, supposedly eliminating the
middleman. They send on request, sample books of carpet and padding. Also some nice
brocures on their company, how to find a local installer or chose an installer from
their "network".

Thanks to Bruce of this group who has given me some excellent tips on buying from
mail order places in Dalton. But, was wondering if anyone has used this company?

We compared, and they weren't that good of a deal.

The installer they recommended highly was OK, but I wouldn't
necessarily use him again. (Do all installers trash the woodwork and
walls?)

I have used S&S Mills twice and was very satisfied both times. Prices
were slightly better than local stores but since I dislike salesdrones
to the point of hostility, lying on the floor with my wife and
going over the samples ourselves was worth more than the small savings.
We took our time and learned a lot about threads per inch, backing
materials from their samples. If the samples they send are as impressive
and informative as they were 6-7(?) years ago, then you'll be very
satisfied.

I found my own installer in the yellow pages...

Bennet - I have a question for you. After your job was completed, and
you were less than thrilled with the quality of the installation, did
you contact S&S mills to let THEM know that the installer did a poor
job ? If you did then they might have removed that person from their "
recommended list ." That would help S&S Mills protect their reputation
and prevent others from being disappointed like you.

Just kicking in my two cents.

It was not a big problem. Just dragging carpet rolls against door
trim, which abraded it, an instance of buckling in the drywall at the
base, and some trim breakage.

Not the horror stories I have heard and seen from the carpeteria,
installation included, non-english speaking installers. They actually
used installed carpet as a work surface for cutting other carpet
pieces, leaving gouges and grooves of severed tufts!

I ordered carpet from them about nine months ago. I'm very pleased
with the quality of the carpet. The price was slightly better than
the local Home Depot, which pretty much kills the local carpet stores.

My installer was Larry Vawter, whom you may have seen around this
newsgroup. I can't speak to other S&S recommended installers, but he
did a terrific job. If you are moving large rolls of carpet,
especially in a new house, I don't see how any installer can avoid
some scuffing of the walls and the baseboards. Of course, the
installer can use lots of separate pieces and seam them together.
That might be somewhat easier on your walls, but won't be as nice a
job.

Before you actually order the carpet, have your installer look at the
job. He will probably estimate the square footage better than you can
and will be able to work with you on the number of seams. Larry
amazed me at how few seams he needed to use and asked for less carpet
than I thought I needed, saving me about 10%. That's what a true pro
can do for you.

I have used S&S carpet for myself and also one of my children purchased carpet from S & S. The quality is superb. I have had my carpet for over 10 years and looks great. I will be looking for carpet again and will go to S&S carpet for my purchase.

I'd like to see the rest of that 1999 thread. It was in the mid-90’s that I
bought carpet from S&S after getting the free sample pack and brochures
from them. I wonder if I responded to Dennis telling him how satisfied I
was.

Unfortunately, 17 years ago, Dennis was kidnapped by mobsters who rolled him up in his carpet and took him away. He hasn't been heard from since. It was a real tragedy. 8-(

Think it was _This Old House_ on an old episode did a tour of carpet
mills in Georgia. IIRC, most carpet is made in Georgia. Fabric and
cloth mills shut down many years ago in Alabama and Georgia. (Phenix
City, AL and Columbus, GA)

If you ever get a chance, watch the _Phenix City Story_ movie. A Ft.
Benning base commander threatened to put a tank on the bridge and
threatened until his arrested soldiers were released (or something
like that).

People have no idea of how over-regulation by government agencies has run manufacturing right out of the country worse than high taxes have. o_O

Yup, and lots of self-employed folks in "regulated" professions. I hung
it up after 40+ years.

Got fed up with know-nothing social-engineering lawyers and bureaucrats
(some of whom could barely spell the name of my profession) legislating
feel-good, look-good, sound-good, politically correct but damaging as
hell rules and regulations restricting what I could and couldn't do or
say to help my clients.

Now instead of:
1.) helping organizations and employees prosper
2.) employing two people- one of whom is a "disadvantaged" woman
3.) paying a healthy chunk of income and business tax every quarter,

I'm laying back and collecting social security ;-)

I gave up on the corporate world in the 1980's due to Affirmative Action and went to work for myself and later got together with other Caucasian male American citizens who were like me. Too disabled to hold an 8-5 job but able to work when we could get out of bed. I worked until I couldn't work anymore and now roll around the halls of the nursing home and physical terrorism department where the physical terrorists are trying to get me walking again. I'd work if I could. It's frustrating as hell to be unable to get up and go. o_O

LA manufactures quite a bit too. When I was driving I frequently loaded
carpet in LA and delivered it to the Dalton area. Then I'd load carpet
and head back to LA, sometimes with a stop in Las Vegas. It all looked
like rugs to me.

You can't get 4 rows of carpet (12' long) in a 48' trailer so we had the
joy of pulling doubles, 2 rows in each pup. Fortunately the greater
acceptance of 53' trailers phased out the doubles.

Been years, but iirc, carpet could be ordered in 16' rolls, too.

Worked awhile as an carpet installer helper. 12' always hung out the
back doors of the work van :)

15' is the other common size although I don't remember ever hauling any.
13.5' is the odd size.

15' would probably add shipping costs but sometimes that doesn't matter.
I ran from LA to Denver with 3 rolls of carpet once. It was for a
restaurant that would be closed for the one day for the installation.
The installer was caught short and whatever penalty he would incur by
missing the date was more than the transportation. That particular run
was COD for the delivery and he wrote a check for over $1000 without
blinking. I have no idea what the carpet was worth.

I liked that one. I went up the hill and through the Eisenhower tunnel
like a big dog. Beats lugging 44,000 lbs of dead batteries over the top.
