I've been using behr hi-gloss enamel paint on many flat surfaces with great
glass-like results if I water it down well. But now I'm dealing with
vertical surfaces (trim) and I'm really stuck. I'm painting the flat board
that a pocket door hits when it closes. The board is 8 feet tall, and about
7 inches wide. Totally flat, no curves on the surface.

If I water the paint down, it runs. If I uses Floetrol, that stuff takes
out the gloss, so it is not an option. And if I don't water it down, that
darn Behr stuff is so thick that I can't keep a wet edge and the brush marks
are really obvious even when I paint very fast.

What can I do? Is there a different brand of hi-gloss white paint that
people love, that dries slowly and smooth? Or am I doing something wrong
to paint this vertical piece with my Behr paint?

In my experience, each brand of paint applies and brushes differently.
What I used to do when painting my boat was to thin the paint down and
roll it on a sizeable area (20 ft sq). Then I'd take a dry, 4" brush
and keep tipping it off - with light, rapid strokes - until it reached
the point of no longer running. Gotta tip it until it will no longer
run put will still flow enough to smooth out the brush strokes.

Have you considered a spray paint? I have had good luck with the Rustoleum
brand of spray paint in the large silver can. I think it is called
professional maintence paint and is available at Lowe's and Home Depot. I
used it on the hand rail going to my basement and it has held up very well.
I have also used it on some lawn furniture and light fixtures. Just mask
off the area well and put on several light coats to build up a high gloss,
durable surface.

Can you use a roller? I use a 3" roller on all my doors.
