I used a little lighter fluid to help get off a small piece of goop or
something from my nice wood sorta dark stained table. Anyway now the little
spot is really shiny and slick from the area I rubbed. I find out now I
shouldn't have down that because of the petroleum based lighter fluid.
Anything I can do to make it look better or fix it barring completely
refinishing hte table? Could a furniture repair place fix it if I can't? Can
I very lightly sand it to make it look right?

Hi,

At Ace Hardware or Home Depot you can buy wood repair kits with several
different color sticks and markers. If the area is not too big you can color it
in with one of the sticks or markers and then do a light coat of varnish if the
rest of the wood is varnished.

Buff the shiny patch lightly with 0000 steel wool, or the plastic
ubstitute - goes under the name of Scotchbrite in UK

Try wiping with naptha, similar to paint thinner, as it is often used after
finishing that uses mineral oil as lubricant. Wouldn't consider sanding to be
viable.

Oh, I'm sure a furniture repair place would be happy to fix it.

Before resorting to that, I'd try a little 000 steel wool.

Could it be that the lighter fluid (naptha) removed a wax finish? Maybe rub in
some paste wax.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

This will just dull it up?

Where do I get this paste wax? How do I ask for it? How can I tell if the
funish is gone?
