I'm in the middle of replacing a pop-up drain assembly in a bathroom sink and
I cannot unstick the drain flange (the chrome part which shows in the sink).
It does not have "cross-hairs" or anything else to grip onto. In desperation
I'm trying penetrating oil and needle nose pliers on the edge of the flange.
So far ==> no luck ==<
Does anyone have some hints on how to unstick the flange from the pop-up
assembly? I know someone must have been down the same path.
Any and all responses are appreciated!
-Noel

But be careful not to fuck up your sink with that sawzall. As long as you
are careful about where you're cutting, you'll be fine.

Remove the sink from the vanity
Loosen the large nut on the pop up assy. that maintains the water tight
seal with the bottom of the sink
Flip the sink upside down
Using a block of scrap wood to protect the brass pipe from damage gently
rap on the end of tail piece (the part of the pop up that goes into the
trap) with a hammer. This should free the flange from contact with the
sink.
If you have loosened the large nut enough you should be able to grab the
flange with vise grips and with a pair of water pump pliers on the pop up it
should move.
if it is really rusted into a single piece then when you get the flange
unstuck from the sink you can cut through the pop up assembly between the
large nut and the bottom of the sink with a hacksaw. It is brass so it
will go quite quickly
When installing the new one paint the threads on the flange with "no-leak"
compound. this will make future removal easier.
