Actually the pressure tank is responsible for the water pressure to the
building. The volume/pressure of the air precharge inside the tank has to be
set correctly. Correct is 1-2 psi less air than the cutin pressure switch
setting; i.e. if 20/40 19 psi of air, 30/50 29 psi etc.. The air pressure
being taken with no water in the tank.

Didn't most of the systems that used piston pumps also use the
'side-of-tank' air inlet valve?
No precharge and no diaphram, just an adjustment on the air valve to let out
the right amount of air?

I would think they did but around here it's rare that a galvanized tank would
last this long if original with a piston pump and precharged tanks can be
used.
