We pull our water out of the river. There is a piston pump and an old
galvanized pressure tank.
System works okay although I would like a little more pressure. The total
lift (to the upper floor) probably is 25-30 feet.
Would a jet pump make any difference? Would a new pressure tank and the
existing pump increase pressure. Or would I be wise to follow a policy of
"if it ain't broke don't fix it.?"

Piston pump? Are you sure it is not a centrifugal pump? Haven't seen a piston
pump in 30 years at least. As a matter of fact I have only seen one for potable
water use.

Oh, yea they're still around. The piston pumps can't be beat for longevity.
To the poster, the pressure can be turned up to 50-60 psi, but thats about
it. Wait till it dies and replace it with a centrifugal one (not a jet pump,
that's for PULLING from depth).

Actually the pressure tank is responsible for the water pressure to the
building. The volume/pressure of the air precharge inside the tank has to be
set correctly. Correct is 1-2 psi less air than the cutin pressure switch
setting; i.e. if 20/40 19 psi of air, 30/50 29 psi etc.. The air pressure
being taken with no water in the tank.

Didn't most of the systems that used piston pumps also use the
'side-of-tank' air inlet valve?
No precharge and no diaphram, just an adjustment on the air valve to let out
the right amount of air?

I would think they did but around here it's rare that a galvanized tank would
last this long if original with a piston pump and precharged tanks can be
used.
