I broke the transparent plastic meat drawer in my refrigerator. It's
broken in a zig, zag pattern. I tried gluing it with some Mxbon 105
Cyanoacrylate adhesive that had become so thick that it was very hard
to use.

I glued the broken edges together and then tried to reinforce the
repair with fiberglass screen covered in baking soda but since the
glue didn't sink into the baking soda, I wasn't able to reinforce the
repair. I had to remove the fiberglass screen and the baking soda
because it wasn't attacked to the drawer at all.

Before the glue got so thick, it would soak into the baking soda and
form a substance as hard as a rock.

The un-reinforced repair failed in one day.

Is there any way I can thin out the Mxbon glue so that I can use it
with baking soda?

Is there another type of glue that would be better for this
application?

I have some pieces of Lexan. Would gluing a piece of lexan over the
damaged area be better than the screening, baking soda, and
Cyanoacrylate glue? If it would, what glue would be the best to
attach the Lexan sheet?

Thank you in advance for all answers.

Personally, I would buy a new drawer if I could.

Using glue , or anything else in the refrigerator, not proven to be safe
around food seems like a dangerous practice to me.

Just a thought maybe epoxy resin would work. May be worth a try or if you
can order a new draw. They can not be that expensive I would think.

This is Turtle.

Clean all the other stuff off it and use Super Glue. It's clear and can't
see it. Also don't cratch your head when you have it on your fingers.

Now you can always buy a new draw , too.

Look here for info and to order
http://www.tapplastics.com/plastics/plasticsinfo/adhesives.html

I keep 3 different Weld-On adhesives available for making plastic items out
of acrylic and polycarbonate. You will need one that wicks into a tight
crack.

Just fixed the door shelf on my 'fridge. The front support that holds the
gallon milk jugs from falling off the shelf. Used a 2 part, 5 minute
epoxy. Cured hard as a rock and has been ok for a couple of weeks now.
With 3 kids our 'fridge gets a lot of abuse. Looks like this fix worked
just fine.

SCIGRIP 16 10315 Acrylic Cement, Low-VOC, Medium bodied has worked great for any of my refrigerator repairs. It will also bond rigid PVC, ABS, styrene, butyrate, polycarbonate to themselves and each other, as well as other plastics and porous surfaces

I'd be inclined to just phone up some used appliance shops and see if
you can buy that plastic shelf from one of their old fridges.

Often used appliance shops will cannibalize all the parts from several
fridges to make one fridge that's in good shape. That leaves them with
lots of left over parts from the remaining fridges they aren't selling.

I've not heard from Turtle, in about that many
years. From what I remember, he took a bad fall,
and had some brain injury. Stopped posting, many
years ago.

In article <nestork...@diybanter.com>,

...or call the manufacturer. I had a 15 year old GE fridge a few years
back. The plastic drawers (not sure what kind of plastic they were) had
a lifetime warranty. When one of them cracked, I contacted GE. They
sent a free replacement.

Greg, IDK that you could be sweet talked out of your drawers! (g)

does the plastic feel waxy like a Tupperware container? If so, you're
sol; that family of plastics is very difficult to work with. Is it stiff
and sort of brittle? Try a little acetone (nail polish remover) in an
inconspicuous place. If it softens the surface, Duco should work. The
solvents may result in a stronger bond than CA.

The best solution is to watch the side of the road and get a drawer
from a junk fridge. If this is Whirlpool there are really only a few
drawers.

Probably methylene chloride, or GOOP.

My vegetable bin had a crack at the corner that went down the side. I used E6000 glue and so far it is holding together well. Just make sure you let the glue dry for a few days before you put it back in the refrigerator because the glue smell while it is drying will affect your food. I called the glue customer help line and they told me once it is dry, there should be no problem using the glue for a food bin. So just make sure it is dry before using it and putting it back in the refrigerator.

I just used E6000 too! I am taking your advice and make sure its 100% cured before using it. I had a big piece break off the back part that sits on top and hold the veggies bins. The whole thing was failing before I found it. I found the broken piece and glued it and the corners where cracks were forming because of failed broken piece. How that piece even broke, is the million dollar question, but regardless, I used E6000 on my handle on my oven when it came out of the hole it belonged in! LOL I must have a heavy hand, but that's been holding now for at least a year or more now. I am so glad for your post because I think E6000 is the best glue. Takes forever to bond I had to hold it all together, because no way to brace it otherwise, for at least 20 min before it was strong enough to hold itself. But, I am so tickles when I woke up this morning to see it was really holding. I am going to look and see if there are any ore little cracks I missed and put some glue on those as well. Thank you again for your post.
