Now that we can't get 100 watt bulbs, what are folks planning to use to
heat the pump or well house?

"rough service" 100 W incandescents are still available, but I just
stocked up on regular bulbs before the ban. Figure I've got 10 yr or
more before needs must worry. (But, the pump house itself here has gas
heater; I keep the incandescent bulbs primarily for the barn and other
outbuildings for winter when the warmup for the CFLs is just so annoying
or they don't light fully at all (altho the latter is less frequent now
than with the originals)...

Splitter and two 60 watt bulbs.

With two sixties, I'm saving energy and
preserving the planet.

I use 100w bulbs for work and still have plenty
left, but I've also found a replacement I like:
A 72w halogen that has a small halogen bulb
mounted inside a traditional incandescent
bulb, in lieu of a filament. So it's halogen light
but looks and fits like a standard bulb. Nice
light... and plenty warm. :)

When Germany banned incandescents, that was the end run. "This is a 100W
portable heating element. The fact that it emits light is entirely
incidental."

I think 60 watts are banned too, so I saw a big stack of 54 watt bulbs at a
hardware store. There are probably 94 watt bulbs out there.

Dollar Tree, near me, had a sign over the 60
watt bulbs, closing out, and no more stock to
be had.

First they came for the 100 watt light bulbs. I
didn't speak out because I didn't use 100 watt
light bulbs.

Then, they came for the 60 watt light bulbs.

I need the heat, not the light, so I use a 120V 500 watt baseboard heater
by Cadet:

http://tinyurl.com/lg38len

I added the built-in thermostat and a line cord so I can just plug it into
the wall:

http://tinyurl.com/nw46klw

Even though the heater consumes 500 watts, the thermostat ensures it only
comes on when it is needed. Of course, insulating the pump house helps with
that.

Have you tried LED in the cold? Now that the price is coming down, I'm
switching to at least some LED bulbs and I like the daylight version as
it is a brighter whiter light.

Actually, no, I haven't. They'd been so pricey I'd not just for that
reason but they have come down. They'd be nice in the summer but in
winter the heat doesn't hurt, anyway...

But, it's a worthwhile suggestion...maybe I will try one or two in the
locations that are just general usage so there's no real reason for
local heating.

Yeah, for those locations where the heat is a desired output. I've been
afraid to put the halogens in the barn for flammability worries.
Probably unwarranted concern, but...

I got a couple off Ebay, 5 watt "corn cob" and 2 watt
"flood". They don't put out enough light to be useful.
I'd try one or two, and see if they are useful before
buying several. DAMHIKT.

I'd not want to risk it. Halogens are a
fire risk.

The other guy uses ceramic heater with
thermostat, that sounds safer.

2 watt flood? In my bathroom I put 800 lumen (60W equiv.) and I think
they are 9W. In a three light fixture they are quite bright.

I bought enough 100 watt bulbs to last my lifetime. For our pump house, I have heat tape on the pipes and a heat lamp suspended overhead focused on the pump housing to keep it from freezing solid.

LOL

I bet a bought a 20 year supply of those 100 watt incandescent bulbs
because I really liked those "Reveal" type.

Then decided to go CFL and full spectrum fluorescent.

Think I will put them on Craig's list and get rid of them

you can get more money for them if you outfit a trench coat with a lot of

So do CFLs.
I have CFLs in a lamppost.
No complaint and I no longer have to replace the bulbs
every nine months or so.

Some of the older CFL's took forever to reach full power, if ever.
Vast improvement since the originals. OTOH, I just put an LED
floodlight above the garage. Nice light! (but $24)

Yep, have LEDs in my ceiling fixtures in the kitchen.
Similar prices as yours but the quality of the light is
outstanding.

Alaska,

The ban seems to ban far less than most folks think. You should be able
to buy 60 watt. Put a bunch of them in the pump house.

I think I bought a couple 200-300 waters in case I needed them for heat,
mostly for series insertion when trouble shooting electronics.

I have LEDs in the kitchen ceiling fan/light, all the hall lights, my
basement office, all the bedroom ceiling lights, and most of the lamps
in the house. Have not paid more than $8 each for any of them (bought
using discount cupons from hydro and online from China. Some of the
Chinese stuff wasn't worth what I paid for it - some has been
excellent.

Indeed! Some folks actually started an operation and started to
advertise a product called "Heatball". They had a nicely designed
website on which they explained that a "Heatball" is a small electric
heating device, that more or less accidentally also emits light.
People could actually place orders - the folks themselves obviously
ordered a truckload of (of course) ordinary light bulbs that had the
brand "heatball" printed on them from some foreign country where light
bulbs were still legal.

Unfortunately, the customs office didn't let these "heatballs" enter
Germany, claiming they were just light bulbs, which were no longer a
legal product to sell. The heatball guys even published the letters
they exchanged with the customs office on their website - kind of
funny how they explained that customs must have made a mistake, as a
lightbulb is not a light bulb, but a heating device, and clearly
marked as such.

I actually ordered two heatballs myself two years ago, but never got
them delivered due to the product being blocked from entering Germany.
I didn't really need them - neither for lighting purposes, nor for
heating - but I found that whole operation quite funny, so I though
I'd support these guys with an order of my own. :-)

Greetings,
Nils

I found out that I like the CFL's and bought those Reveal bulbs for my
wife's studio. Soon after I bought them, I converted the studio to full
spectrum fluorescent...so I had no use for them.

Considering that I bought them last year..I think it great that they
took the items back with no hassle.
