Yes! We have determined it as the fan, HOWEVER--there is nothing caught
in the mechanism.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

A fan bearing might have gone bad. (If so, you ought to try to get it
replaced for free, since fan bearings should be good for ten years
minimum.)

Check to see if the fan blade is loose on the shaft or if the hub is loose
in the blade. Replacements are cheap and I've found this before.

Sometimes the drain pan that sits underneath can rattle. They usually have
foam pads but they can come loose. You then have a pan vibrating against a
support. Very annoying.

i've got a new (~2 months old) maytag fridge (freezer above)
that makes an unusual noise occasionally, it sounds sort of
like water dripping down on something hot, hissing and
evaporating, but in a slightly deeper tone. seems to be
coming from behind the freezer area. i've only noticed it
a few times so far, and it lasts for about five minutes. i
could place a service call (and will if i can't track down the
problem) but the chances of it actually making any noise while
a repair person's there are very slim.

anyone know what might cause this sound? the fridge and
freezer seem to be cooling fine, but this sound is loud
enough to be heard from adjoining rooms (one of my guests
commented on it the other night).

regards,

elef

Aaaa let me guess. You have a frost free unit? Thought so. What you are
hearing is the defrosting of the refrigerant coils that sit in between the
refrigerator and freezer compartments. There is a heater coil
encased/sealed in a plastic tube right under the coils. Below this is a
small catch basin with a drain tube that runs somewhere down to the
evaporator pan under your refrigerator. Periodically (usually every six
hours on a commercial unit) it defrosts for a specific period of time at
which time the cooling system stops running and electrical current is
applied to the heating coil. You then hear the water hissing on the hot
coil spring casing and then dripping onto the catch basin, down the tube
and into the pan below.

As for the fan, the bearing could be going bad and starting to seize up
just a bit. This happened to mine recently and when I went to replace it I
decided while I was in there I'd better replace the "squirrel cage" that
attached to the fan motor's shaft as well. Now the fan runs quieter than I
ever remember.

It is probably exactly what you are hearing - melted ice dripping on the
defrost heater. I bet the compressor is not running when this happens since
it is during the defrost cycle and probably happens roughly every 6 hours.

Certainly at leats call Maytag to confirm this.

Hello,
I was just wondering, does your new refrig. have a
icemaker? If so it could be what your hearing is the icemaker
taking on water, i've seen some refrig.'s that are quite loud
taking on water. Does the noise come on quickly and stop
quickly?

oops, i should've mentioned that. no icemaker.

looks like i should call maytag and see what they have to say
about it.

thanks, all, for the info.
