I'm hoping that someone can help.

We have a very high pitch sound, somewhere in our kitchen that we can not
find. We even shut off the electricity to the whole house to see if we could
localized it. Still there with no electric!

I am absolutely stumped.

It is present all the time, day and night, windy or not, hot or cold?

Check the windows, try opening one and see if the sound stops.

Shut off the main water supply and bleed off residual pressure
by opening a couple of faucets.

If you have gas appliances (range), shut its gas off; often a
pilot light will squeal.

Did you turn off *all* the electric, including 240V (usually an outside panel,
the in-house breakers don't control things like your range that run on 240V)?

We have a mechanical clock on our Jenn-Aire range that makes a very annoying
and hard to locate noise sometimes.

Where do YOU live? Everywhere I've been, the only thing not controlled
from inside was the air conditioner (control box next to the compressor)

It started yesterday. Much, much too high a pitch to be wind. And,
absolutely steady in tone and volume.

I might try that. We did open a few facets to see it changes, but it didn't.
The source is also very hard to localize, but does not seem to come from a
water facet. Also, it never changes in pitch or volume and is very high
pitched.

It "sounds" electronic, but I don't see how its possible!

Got a digital clock radio that might have a backup battery in it? And, did
you try the suggestion (already posted) about opening a couple of faucets
and turning off the main water supply? Finally, where is your water heater
located?

The note about the gas line (assuming you have gas heat or a gas stove)
is a good idea. It also could be a safety issue.

Also look for any battery powered or back up devices including smoke or
CO detectors. How about your telephone? Disconnect the line where it comes
into your home.

It was a battery-powered meat thermometer. No kidding.

We had a case where a brand new electronic controlled range was
intermittently beeping. We had our technicians go out 3 times and
never heard the sound. So at the insistence of the customer we ordered
in a new electronic control to install into the range.

While preparing the range for service the technician finally heard the
sound. He traced it to a nearby drawer where a smoke detector with the
batteries running low was found to be the culprit.

When hubby and I were newlyweds, I had one of those "what's that
noise" moments. We were in living room with the TV on. He could not
hear it, of course. A butter wrapper had fallen out of the trash can and
was being chewed on by ants. Ant spray = no more sound.

I had a really bad smell near the return vent of my central air unit
(upstairs). Smelled like AC unit was on fire. Called repair guy out.
He could not find problem. After a few days (smell was REAL bad) I
happened to put my hand on the wall near the switch for the ceiling fan
in my bedroom (right near return vent) and the wall was HOT. I had that
switch out of that wall within a minute. I don't know how the house did
not burn down.

I had a similar thing happen to me at the office last week. A beeping sound
coming from somewhere around my desk that I couldn't localize. Shut off my
laptop, monitor, disconnected every wire, still happened. Finally traced
it(after much puzzling) to the box that I was using as a 'stand' for my laptop.
A box which held a cordless phone...whose battery was running down...
Augh!

I had it happen to me years ago.

It was a high pitched electronic whine, everywhere in the house, much louder near the ceiling, but nothing in the attic, nothing outside.

Of course it was 3:00 AM. I probably spent a half hour going from room to room with a stepladder trying to isolate it, going in and outside just to see.

Then I was outside scratching my head, and switched hands. There it was. My battery operated wrist watch was making it. When I climbed a ladder it echoed off the hard plaster ceiling and got louder. Outside it just was absorbed.

And they aren't that expensive. Basic ones that work well can be
had for $15, maybe less and can be used to measure cold temps accurately
too, like the temp of air coming out of your AC vents.

Thermopen MK-4 reads ~ 2-3 seconds. I have a wireless unit (another
brand) with two probes. Monitor 2 hunks of meat or 1 meat and 1 grate
temp. Some units have 6 probes that will post the cook data on a web
site with graphs and charts on the genius phone App.

Professional kitchen Chefs use different colors of the Thermopen MK-4
so as not to cross-contaminate different foods and meats.

I had an identical situation, but instead of the high pitched noise coming from the meat thermometer, it was from the gas pilot light. let me explain:

after i read through this thread, i checked my digital meat thermometer and found there was no noise coming from it. Then I painstakingly followed the noise for half an hour and traced it to my gas stove (I have a vintage O Keefe and Merritt stove). The tone seemed like it was coming from the pilot light for the oven (for my model, there are a total of 3 - one for each side of the burners, and one underneath the oven, located in the broiler drawer). Then I shut off the gas to the oven, and the high pitched noise stopped!! I brushed the white ash off of the pilot light and adjacent surfaces, and cleaned the area with some compressed air. Turned back on the gas, relit the pilot light, and voila! no more noise.

hope this helped.

This thread saved my sanity - I don't own a meat thermometer so I was able to rule that out right away - turned out to be an overhead light bulb that was on its way out, which someone else suggested here as a potential cause. As soon as I flipped off the lights - voila! Blessed quiet. Thank you!

Hey I solved mine also just now, after humiliating myself, accusing aliens. I remembered I did have a permanent hair removal system in my skin care case, it was a nine volt battery! God I'm so glad I came across your post or I would not have thought it could be a battery. Ok well,,WOW! THANKS

Brad. Thank you for posting as my mystery high pitched sound was my Brookstone battery-operated meat thermometer!! I was thinking it was the ballast in my overhead fluorescent light fixture. Due to reading your comment I solved my annoying problem that has gone on for 3 days. What a surprise. Thank you! Lisa

Oh my God, I'm so thankful for this thread!!! I've had the same issue for the last few days. I was going crazy! Checked all the appliances, water etc. Saw this, opened the drawer with the meat thermometer and BINGO! I can't believe it was someone so obscure! Peace at last! Thank you for following up and posting what it was or I would have never found it!

Dude, idk if you will see this but, 16 years later I did the same things you did and right as I am about to shut of my gas, I see that it was an electric meat thermometer that was your problem. Sure as hell, it was my electric meat thermometer. Thanks.

Thank you so much for sharing this! I was hearing a persistent high-pitched ringing in my kitchen for hours and I couldn't find the source. Turns out, my cat had dropped his battery-operated toy mouse in his water bowl and the battery was dying.

THANK YOU!!! We saw your post about the meat thermometer causing the high-pitched noise, found ours in a drawer and that was indeed the culprit!

We found a baby pacifier that was also a thermometer. Thanks for the tip that it could be a thermometer. Good luck out there.

We had the same issue here. Found the battery powered meat temperature fork batteries were dying and corroded. Thanks for the tip.

Wow, another guy posted the same thing just a couple of minutes ago.
I'm going to replace all the batteries in my meat thermometers this week.

Thanks for the tip.

It is currently February 2023 (HELLO FROM THE FUTURE!) - I took the battery out of a Thermpro Meat Thermometer on your suggestion, and that maybe did the trick!

I also found a small cat toy that was emanating noise, and maybe that was it as well?

Your single thread of advice "It was my meat thermometer" maybe just saved me a weekend of madness

Hello from 2023!

I had a similar issue randomly start last night, I remember my cat bringing their little noise making toy in to the living room, I picked it up and it was definitely making some sort of noise - tossed that away and *fingers crossed* that was it!

What did that cat think?

A *battery-powered* meat themometer! You're lucky it didn't catch fire.
What happened to the ones that needed no battery?

I'm glad you can turn the electricity back on.
