Hello,
I have a 1/2 horsepower Sears Craftsman Chain Driven Garage Door
Opener Model No. 9-53970 that will not show ANY signs of getting
power. The only thing I have checked so far is that the plug it is
plugged into does have power so it's not a circuit breaker.

I am looking for any suggestions or others that have had similar
problems. I have done several searches and can't find anything that
fits my problem.

Unit worked fine this afternoon then my daughter tried the local push
button and she said nothing happened. The light in the push button is
off, no light on the unit itself, and no green LED on the sensors. It
acts like there is no power to the unit but as I said the plug is hot.

Any suggestions as where to start trouble shooting is appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan

Take a hammer or a board and whack the back of the unit - on the end
opposite the chain drive - and see what that does. Sounds crazy, but my
son had the same problem with the same unit. Whacking it got it working
again for a while, but showed us where the problem lay. It was in the
circuit board just inside that back end of the unit. Looked it up on
Sear's web site, he ordered a new one and he put it in.

Some units have a manual circuit breaker on the box itself.

I too had to replace the circuit board in my Craftsman opener after a storm
in the area. The IC boards are apparently very susceptible to power surges.
Mine still had lights but wouldn't open & close the door. However, a damaged
board can have different symptoms.

Same symptoms on my craftsman 1/2hp opener, no power. Hit the back of the unit and it worked for another day but finally the board failed. Ordered a new circuit board, easy install and it works fine. I didn't even have to adust limits....did have to reprogram remotes though.

When that happened to me a couple of times it turned out that the power company was sending 68 volts on one of the two lines which was supplying the opener. 68 volts affected some appliance but not others. I would not have known if I hadn’t checked with my volt meter.
