Hello! I am having problems with E127584 photocells. I purchased 6
Kichler Atwood Fluorescent outdoor lights with dusk sensors less than a
year ago. In the last month, two have gone out. At first I thought it
was just a bulb, so I purchased the same model bulbs and installed them.
The first fixture, when turned on, did nothing, so I tried another bulb
and still nothing. As for the second fixture, when I replaced the bulb
and covered the sensor, a click/crack noise was heard then smoke came
out of the top of the light housing. I immediately turned off the
power. They are correctly wired by a licensed electrician and have not
been tampered with since install. I then decided to get help. When I
tried to take them back to where I purchased them, "The Great Indoors",
they had closed for business. I then contacted Kichler directly and
they said it sounded like the photo-sensor and they were "phasing" that
feature out. They sent me two new lights to replace my defective ones
but they are without the photo-sensors. Since I still have 4 more
lights, I am worried/curious if I can replace the photocell's once they
go out? Does anyone know where I can purchase a replacement photocell
that will fit? I tried looking on the web and have had no luck. Thanks
in advance!

If you're still looking, I have a replacement available for $4.50. My company's # is 877-664-5483 Ext. 2230. We are Contractor Lighting & Supply, and my name is Josh. I've sold several of these to replace the E127584, specifically.

Yes, I had a problem with E127584. It was in an outdoor light fixture
installed by pro electrician.
Lamp had GU24 socket base. Bulb was MaxLite GU24 SpiralMax, a flourescent
bulb that draws only 13 Watts but produces lumens equivalent to 60 Watt
incandescent.

The E127584 shorted out inside it's plactic housing, leaving a 1/2 inch whole.
I don't know when it shorted, but it blackened the siding and obviously had
the potential for burning down my house.

Based on the posts on the internet, I am not the only one who has encountered
this problem. This photocell is a piece of dangerous crap and should be
removed from your light fixtures. I snipped it out and wired the fixture
without the photocell. I intend to do the same with the other 2 fixtures that
have the same photocell.

I also intend to write to RU, the manufacturer, and CCthe lamp manufacturer
that was supplied by them.

Andy Goodday.

I had endless troubles with my photo cells, replacing them 2 to 3 times a year.

photo cells dim the light at on and off. this diming with certain fluroscents can take out the photo cell.

and also can be ruined when a incandescent bulb fails going brilliant at end of life. that flash bulb look.

i solved both problems by upgrading to dimable CFLs and am planning to upgrade to dimable Led.

i had planned to install a relay to power the offending fixture, one day i happened to see the flash and found the sensor had failed....

so I tried CFL, but one day saw the bulb flickering dim very brite, and changed the bulb but again found the sensor had failed.

so i went with dimable cfls and havent had a problem since, that must be over 10 years ago...

have the photocell power a relay. so the photocell only carries very low power..

and use CFLs or LED bulbs. Sometimes incandescents burning out create high power surges when the bulb goes white hot for a moment.

Those damage photocell controls....

Hmm,
How come? relay is switching the power to the bulbs. Relay acts like
isolator betweeon cell and 120V. Cell can go bad when exposed to extreme
element.

So the photocell E127584 is a keystone technologies product - I found replacements at greenelectronics.com when I did a google search for fluorescent photocell replacements. My only problem was that it burned out and the first replacement I purchased would have required a bigger hole to be drilled in my light. I was happy to find the same photocell for a Mallorca outdoor light I purchased from Lamps Plus. Lamps plus was worthless when I tried to find a replacement photocell from our local outlet store in North Hollywood.

One thing to check, is if your light has a short circuit. That is one
reason it might have burned out the original photocell.

I was not able to find any information about your E127584. What
diameter is the mounting hole for your old one?

I found two photocell light controllers at Lowes. One is intended for
an outdoor pole lamp, and is probably not what you are looking for. Its
body mounts in a 1 3/8" hole, and a gasket is provided to seal against a
round pole.

The other is much smaller and mounts in an approximately 7/16" hole. It
might fit a 3/8" hole with a little reaming. I bought one to add a
light control to an existing outdoor fixture. I lost the paperwork, but
it may be the one at

I USED to have photocells burn out / fail a lot, till one day I saw my incandescent bulb go white hot burn out, so I replaced the bulb but the photocell was dead:( But at least I had a idea of what was killing them:)

So I replaced the photo cell AGAIN but tried a CFL instead of the incandescent....

that photo cell is going strong perhaps 5 or 8 years old. I did lose a couple CFLs the photo cell causes a diming effect that killed CFLs. so I used the more expensive dimmable CFLs but about a month ago upgraded to a LED bulb. 10 watts power used for 60 watts of nice brite white light.

I have a timer thats making a grinding sound on this circuit, I had it set to be light on from 6AM till midnite, and the photocell only lights the bulb when its dark.

but with the bulbs power usage so low, it may well exceed the running watts of the timer....... how wierd is that?

when I get ambitious I will check this out. may toss the timer in the trash its done its job for perhaps 20 years.

I really like the light quality of the LED, and plan on replacing as many bulbs around here as possible once I confirm the LED is durable

Hello,

Yes, I had the same problem as you. But no worries, the new, improved, part number is Keystone PS-80-1 which is made by the same company UR and it IS the exact replacement for E127584. You can Google "Keystone PS-80-1" And, here is a link to the technical sheet where I purchase my replacement part:

I am having the same issue with Kichler Atwood Lights. I have also purchased & installed 6 of these lights with the PhotoCell features. I now have 2 that do not work. I see that you were able to get Kichler to replace them but my lights are about 4 ears old. The 2 have been defective for over a year & I have just begun to research how to get them fixed. I see in later posts that a new sensor is available to replace the faulty one. Do you know how difficult it would be to replace the sensors. I really hate to call the electrician to come back to do that. I am fairly handy with repairs, myself. Thanks for any response.

Dgtmt1-

I'm not familiar with that particular light, but recently had photocells
go bad in two other lights.

One photocell had lasted ten years, the other about two years. I
believe both were affected by heat from the lights in which they were
installed. The longer life photocell was in a mercury vapor security
light, and was replaced by one similar to the original. If the new
photocell lasts ten more years, the entire fixture may be due for
replacement!

The short-lived photocell had been used to modify another light fixture
that originally did not have one. Since I was not able to find a
replacement that was small enough, I mounted an external photocell on
it. That way the photocell will not be exposed to the lamp's heat. In
addition, it has a swivel so it can be aimed to favor sunrise or sunset.

The one I used is a Utilitech Swivel Photo Control, Model

Whether you can change your Kichler Atwood photocells depends on how
easy it is to get to them. I suggest you do a "trial run" and open one
up to see how hard it might be. You may need to enlarge the old
mounting hole to fit a new photocell. Wiring is simple with Neutral,
Line and Load wires needing to be connected. Chances are the new wire
colors will be identical to the old, and insulated "wire nuts" from the
old will work with the new one.

live in Miami and have 12 outdoor lights with solar photocells. I have

i had a photocell on my pole light. perodically it would burn out for no apparent reason.

till one day it was just getting dark and i witenesed its death.......

the pole lighht turned on. the incandescent bulb burned out in one of those brilliant sun bright displays.

i went and got another bulb but it didnt light

so i went and got a new pole light sensor from inventory. they were hard to find so i bought several at a time.....

changed the light sensor and all was well.

conclusion..... the brilliant light was from high current that wiped out the sensor. about this time CFLs came out. that light sensor must be over 10 / 15 years old......... the plastic sensor window has discolored turned milky white. i am going to restore my vans headlights, i will try a bit on the sensor

if the OP is using incandescent bulbs you might try a LED bulb.

longer life may be your reward.

LED and CFL bulbs won't work in my mercury vapor lamp. After 15 years,
I noticed that the light was coming on when it got a little overcast.
Replacing the photocell with an exact replacement returned it to normal
operation.

About the same time, a photocell did the same thing on another lamp. I
had added a small photocell to a lamp that used CFL bulbs. Even though
they use less power, there is still some heat involved with CFL and LED
bulbs. I believe it is this heat that makes the photocells go bad, and
use of incandescent bulbs would only accelerate the process.

For that lamp, I made a bigger hole and mounted an external photocell.
When/if the mercury vapor lamp's photocell goes bad again, I will use
the external replacement on it too. Its mounting hole happens to be the
right size for the external photocell.

Pat-

My mercury vapor security light has been in continuous use since it was
installed in 2000. The first bulb lasted less than a year. Its
replacement is still going strong. The photocell replacement was the
only other repair needed.

Converting it to LED seems like a good idea considering savings in
electricity, but I have two concerns:

1. I have not had an LED bulb failure in the short time they have been
in use. Although individual LED elements may last a long time, the
associated electronics may not. My experience with CFL bulbs is that on
average, their electronics fail long before the fluorescent tube wears
out. Time will tell.

2. Many of my LED bulbs generate radio interference. I have had to
test each to select ones that do not. The security light is near my Ham
Radio antennas. It uses a 100 Watt mercury vapor lamp. I have not
found a 100 Watt equivalent LED bulb that does not interfere.

Thanks for the link. I know they are out there! The trouble is that
they cost a lot to try, only to find out they ruin radio reception.

I think I will try the CREE and Phillips bulbs. Some of theirs have
been the best for 60 Watt equivalent.

Walmart has their own LED bulbs that are sometimes cheaper than
name-brands. Their 60 Watt equivalent (Non Dimmable) seems OK, but
their 100 Watt equivalent does not.

Purchased an LED outdoor lamp from Costco earlier in 2015 and installed it. Was working great but burned out the photocell and I'm trying to replace that switch. Hard to find one that has a curved body like the E127584. I can see that the thing is rated only 32W, which is woefully inadequate. Fortunately, it didn't burn out beyond the unit itself. Lasted about 8 months.

When a photocell is mounted internal to the light, heat may shorten its
life. This photocell mounts externally, possibly in the same hole as
the original. If it would fit your light, it might solve your curved
body problem.

After a period of time, the lights were staying on later and later in the morning and lately, they are still on at noon until the sun starts to hit the photocell. The photocell works, as I can place my thumb over the cell and the light will come on, and as well, I can shine a light on the cell and it will shut off. I called the company that made the light, and of course the clueless customer service person stated that they had never had a problem with the photocell. I bought a replacement at home depot, but it did not work for the 13 watt fluorescent bulb. I've tried cleaning the lens on the cell but it doesn't help. Last resort, I tried plastic buffing agent to get more light through the lens. We'll see. It's hard to fathom that these are energy efficient when they stay on all day. They're not supposed to work that way.

Outdoor lights installed in 2011. First one failed in 2014 and replaced it and it failed now. I will probably use timer switches now.

Timer switches can fail too. I think my failures were heat related,
with the photocell mounted close to a hot light. I replaced one with an
externally mounted photocell, and it seems to be holding up.

I have had an outside light for 5 Years. All of a sudden the light quit
working. I put a meter on it and there was power going to the photo cell,
when I would cover the photocell I could hear a clicking sound but there
was no power going to the light bulb.

My pole light photocell failed often. one day i saw a bulb burn out with that white hot incandescent burn out.

i replaced the bulb, and the photcell was dead.

i thought about adding a relay, but then changed to led bulbs. cut power cost:) ended having to replace bulbs, when the led finally dies i probably wouldnt ever have to replace the light sensor,

however my light sensors glass window must not be glass, must be plastic, its getting cloudy and in any low light situation, it turns the pole light o

so i will replace the sensor again

I have four street lamp posts, about 5 years old, and one of the E127584 photocells was losing sensitivity, turning the lamp on when overcast, but still mid-day.

Check to see if the plastic lenses on the photocell has discolored
from UV rays. This has happened to a couple of my photocells and I
used plastic headlight polishing compound on them and that did the
trick.

I USED to have photocells burn out all the time.........it was a real PIA....

one day i saw the photocell turn on the poll light, which instantly the light went white hot and burned out a new bulb didnt help.........

i replaced the photo cell and a new LED bulb/.

that ended to burned out photocell trouble:)

the high inrush current of incandescent
would take out the light sensors. I was so tired of this hassle i thought about adding a power relay to feed the bulb

but the LED bulbs dont burn out and use nearly no power

Mike-

This thread has been continued since February, 2012.

Among the suggestions, replacing the lamp's bulb with a low powered
equivalent (LED or CFL) is part of the solution. I chose LED over
incandescent, but am still using my original Halogen outdoor light. The
bulb is 17 years old and the photocell was recently replaced for the
first time.

When replacing your photocell, you may have to take what you can find
that fits the E127584 mount.

Condo has 24 exterior lights with this photocell in them. Installed about 4 years ago. So far five photocells have failed. I don’t know the expect lifetime is for photocells but thought it would be longer than that.

Sounds about right. There may be higher quality ones available, but any
that I bought from a big box store never went more than about 5 or 6
years.

Given the failures so far and potential for more, I'd certainly look for
an industrial grade.

Not really. One out of two that you are aware of failed. How may
others have? If it is the only failure out of 100,000 then it is not so
bad.

Take a quick course in statistics and probability and you will see it
proves nothing other than one has failed.
