I have a Roper washer with a direct drive. We've noticed that sometimes
it spins and other times it doesn't during a full cycle. I've stuck a
clothes-pin in the lid switch to keep the washer running while the cylce
is going so that I can see what is happening. On three loads of wash
today, it
1) ran fine on the first spin and didn't spin during the final spin
2) didn't do the first spin, but did spin the final spin
3) same as # 1 above.
During the spins the washer is pumping the water out and the motor does
seem to be running. The washer does agitate alright as well. The odd
thing is when we turn the washer back on to re-spin, it always spins
properly.
Just wondering if this would be the motor coupler as described on the
www.repairclinic.com website or whether something else may be involved.
Also how easy is it to replace the motor coupler. Any particular steps
to follow?
Thanks.
Unlikely. If the coupler *was* broken it shouldn't agitator or spin, just
fill and drain and it would be consistent, not intermittent
Many of the direct drive models have what is called a 'neutral drain'
transmission. When first set to spin, the transmission goes into neutral and
does nothing while the pump removes water. After a period or time, the timer
pauses which resets the transmission and then after when called for spin, it
spins.
There could be a problem inside the transmission causing the neutral to stay
engaged or the timer may not be pausing to allow the switch. You could try
opening the lid (in your case removing the clothes pin) for a short period
when it should be spinning but isn't, then closing the lid again to see if
spin starts then.
If it does spin then, I would suspect a malfunctioning timer may be the
cause which then may need to be replaced. If not, the transmission could be
the cause. You can see a common direct drive transmission at the following
link.

If the washer is less than 5 years old, the transmission is likely under
warranty in which case you'll have to have an *authorized* Whirlpool service
depot replace it for you (as Whirlpool makes Roper). You would likely still
have to pay for the labor depending on the machine's warranty.

Timer might bemissing the built in "pause" to set up for
spinning...many DD washers need this pause ( turnign the machine off
and back on or lifting the lid up or down similates this pause )
before geoing into spin.

*Some* common no spins trouble makers.

A worn motor coupler would/should stop the agitation from working as
well...but there is no harm in checking it and replacing it if it is
getting worn...very easy to change...
