Completely OT: Texas zoning

Hey Bub's always boasting about how Texas has no zoning. But I don't
remember him showing us this before, even though he's a failblog fan.
It's moderately amusing for a Sunday.

Lots of places in Texas have zoning, just not Houston. I don't know that I
boast about it so much as offer it up as a workable alternative. Both zoning
and non-zoning have pluses and minuses. The disadvantage to no zoning is the
risk that a pig farm may open up next door to your home. The disadvantage to
zoning is the graft and corruption it brings.

We prefer to rely on friendly persuastion. A few years ago, Shell Oil bought
a lot on the meandering ways of the classiest street in the most affluent
section of the city with a view toward opening a gas station. Nearby
residents objected, cut up their Shell Credit cards, wrote letters (all
correctly spelling 'disembowel'), and vowed Shell would DIE before such a
thing happened. These residents included John Connolly and (then currect
Secretary of Commerce) Robert Mossbacher.

Shell donated the lot to the city for a "pocket park."

The sign to which you refer is in Fort Worth. I think there's probably a
police sub-station in the same shopping center.

Well, the sign shows a 972 area code, which is usually in Dallas. Fort Worth is
usually 817. With guns and donuts, I'm sure there are a lot of cops around.

Arghh! You're right. I've got a number I call with a 972 area code and they
kept telling me they were in Ft Worth.

Of course they tell me a lot of things, only a few of which are relevant to
the conversation and even fewer that are true. I should have known better.
