I have one of those little things that go on the end of a propane canister.
It is forever acting up. Is there some secret to cleaning down deep in
there? Soak in acetone? I blew it out with the air nozzle, and it's
better, but still an uneven flame pattern, and it is catching fire back at
the holes where the air goes in to mix, which is often exciting.

Use a tiny wire, from a stranded wire, to clean out the nozzle. maybe
adrop of solder or some flux has gotten into the nozzle insert.

If the flame is burning back it indicates a lean gas/air mix. Ie not
enough gas.
The combustion speed is too fast.
The gas nozzle needs poking out with a wire cleaner. You can buy or
make one.

O/A torch tip cleaners would probably work.

What do you think the orifice size is in a "little thing that goes on
the end
of a propane canister"?

A lot of torches do not have a "plain" orifice. Some have a filter -
you cannot see through or poke those clear.

It depends on which torch, there have been a lot of Bernz-o-Matic models
over the years. If it has a filter it's a good candidate for a pressure
flush with some good carb cleaner and then an air nozzle drying. If that
doesn't work, order a replacement part for a few $ if they are still
available or just buy a new torch for $20.

I did the latter. Around $20 got me a new torch, which was clogged
after about 5 minutes of use, and would not light at all. I returned it
to the store, got a replacement, and that one worked well for about one
minute, now it has a flame about the same size as a Bic lighter. That
one will soon be returned to the store, but for a refund this time.

I should note that I used the tank included in the kit, and put the head
on the tank, right out of the box, without any chance of dirt getting
in.

Seems these new torches are really made lousy, or else the propane tanks
are getting debris when they are filled.

When I get my refund, I'm gonna see if I can buy orfices for my old
torches which lasted years before they clogged. Why spend $20 for a new
torch which lasts 5 minutes, and is noticably built of much cheaper
materials, when I can (hopefully) get a replacement orfice for a couple
bucks (just a guess on the orfice price, since I'm not sure where to buy
them yet).

Did you try calling Bernzomatic to see if they could help you?

Could you be any more vague? Little things?????

If it's a torch, sometimes you can take out the orifice
and turn it around. Let the propane blow it out.
Don't forget to blow out the pipe without the orifice first.
If you go sticking a wire in there, you're just as likely
to create more problems than you solve.

FIVE YEAR OLD post, dope. You think Mike has been hanging
around for the last 5 years wondering why it's taken you
so long to reply to his question.

Other folks with the same problem might be the target for suggestions five years after the question. I won't call you an idiot.
