I had a recessed box(4x6) with flourescent lighting inside w/ 3 plastic
panels to diffuse the light in my kitchen. I removed the panels, metal
frame and the flourescent lighting. I corner beaded the rough edges,
textured, primed, and painted. I am going to add recessed lighting
inside the recessed box -- no prob so far. In addition, I want add cove
molding around the box about mid-way. Behind the cove molding I want to
add a rope light. However I am struggling on how to bring 110V power to
the rope lighting. The box is surrounded by 2x10's --and of course on
the face of the 2x10's is drywall. Do I need to hog out all of the
drywall and WOOD to install a work box? Any suggestions on how to bring
in code-legal power to my rope lighting?

Thanks in advance...

Joe

, I thus relpy:

You need to provide an outlet box of some sort for the rope-light
string to plug into.

Ideally I'd like to get an outlet box there but there's a 2x10 behind
the drywall ...

Use a surface mount outlet box

Could you use a surface mount box? If it won't be visible at all, you
could use any of a number of boxes. If it will be visible, you could
at least minimize its intrusiveness by using one of those surface
mount box. The smallest of those only stick out about 1/2-3/4" from
the wall.

Alternatively, you could use one of those very shallow Carlon boxes.
The most shallow that I have seen is only about 1 1/4" deep (
B108R-UPC ). You might be able to get away with adding another layer
of drywall on one side of your recessed box and use that extra depth (
to the 2x10 ) to cut out a hole to install the shallow box. How to
get the cable into the box? I don't know, but you might have to drill
a hole in the 2x10 ( assuming you have sufficient access behind to
fish the cable ) and come into the box from behind.

Regarding surface mounted Work Boxed -- I'll look at them again, but it
needs to hide behind the cove molding, so if sticks out too much it
might peek out on top ...
