3-in-1 motor oil is the stuff. It's sold around here in all the hardware
stores. Otherwise bring a small can down to your local auto service shop
and ask nicely for a something close.

Stay far away from WD-40. Use LPS-1 if you are looking for a thin oil.

However, most of the oil there, unless marked ND, would not be what he would
want to use.
It costs a bit more, but most of the guys that need such an oil, use a
turbine oil, like the ZoomSpout oiler..

Teles oil made by GC Electronics works pretty well for small electrical
motors. I've seen it in a couple of appliance stores where they sell
appliance parts. You should be able to find it at electronic supply places
too (not Radio Shack), but places that cater to tv shops. Haven't looked in
a while, but I think MCM Electronics used to sell it. They have a web site.

As far as regular 3 in 1 oil, I expect you can find that at any Wal-Mart
store in the row where they sell hand tools I believe. I quit using it a
few years ago in favor of the Teles oil. I heard 3 in 1 oil is pretty good
in the beginning, but after a period of time it loses its lubricating
abilities and actually causes more of a problem in some cases (like squirrel
cage fans used to cool large radio transmitters). I don't know if that's
true or not, but Teles oil isn't that much more expensive and I know it
works well. Plus, it has a real nice extension on the bottle to get you in
to tight places.

Check at any hardware / building / borg / etc. for Air Compressor oil.
This is usually SAE 20 wt, it is often mineral based, and should be good
for your purpose.
