I was about to rent a large steamer to clean my light colored carpets for about
35 dollars but I called a service because I was curious of their price. The
guy told me it would cost 120 dollars or maybe more because a light colored
carpet would turn dark when it dries so he would have to use an acidic solution
to keep it light. Is this true about light colors or is he full of it. Thanks
for any help here.

[carpet "pro" tried to reel in a live one]

The "carpet guy" thought he had a live one and was going to bilk you for
everything he could. Rent the steam cleaner, read the instructions
thoroughly on the bottle of cleaning solutions that you'll be using, and
save yourself the $90 by DIY.

I've steam cleaned my own carpets (several rooms have white or light blue)
for years without ever needing to call in a professional to do it. I've also
never had them "grey" after a job.

If you're really feeling a need for a pound of flesh, write a letter to the
local BBB about the scam this guy's running.

the only way a light carpet will go darker when it dries is when too much
water is applied and it gets right through to th backink we call this
browning .........if the carpet cleaner is any good this wont happen...i use
a product called formula 90 on all heavily soiled carpets with no prob no
matter what the construction of the carpet and formula 77 for lightly soiled
carpets these are all liquid products do not use pawders as if not rinced
prop will leave a residue which will help to macke your carpets dirtier
quicker........some worthless info?

Dear Gazza,

Thanks for the information. I have been planning to use the rental
store one that costs about $35 for 24 hours - also but I wanted to
get the best "solution" and have no clue until you wrote it in. It
has stopped me from renting the machine.

Is Formula 90 and Formula 77 something one can buy? If so where?
Thank you so much. It is such a big job and doing it with the best
stuff, by myself is optimum for me.

Aloha Gazza,

I live in Hawaii, on an outer island, also called Hawaii. (It is the
biggest island but with only 148,000 population- new figures released
yesterday <grin>).

We do have a COSTCO, a Walmart and a Kmart. Thanks so much for
helping me with this.

Wishing you a great weekend!
