Hello folks,

I need some advice on how to clean my steam iron which has developed two
patches on the bottom plate! I have tried to no avail to find the answer
online with little joy, hope that someone here can give me some tips or
point me in the direction!

P.S. I'm in the UK by the way if people are going to suggest that I need
certain products!

I'm a better detective than an iron-repairman, and since you are in
the UK, I wondered what kind of iron you have? Does it have a Teflon
coating on the bottom? Is this a steam iron? Is the bottom bare
metal? Do the patches cause the iron to stick? What are the
"patches" and where did they come from? Have you tried wiping the hot
iron on an old terry cotton cloth dampened with vinegar?

Hi Cheggers,

Most hardware stores and I would expect most supermarkets sell an ironing
stick that is wiped over a hot iron to get off stuck-on gunk (for want of a
better word).

It melts as it goes on and you should then use a clean cloth to wipe off the
residue.

Traditionally, to clean an iron wipe it over a piece of brown paper covered
in salt.

Hope this helps

I don't know how old your steam iron is or wht the bottom is made from -- but I
had an older steam iron with metal bottom..looked like chrome but can't be
sure. Anyway, I cleaned inside with white vinegar and got out the gunk caused
by lime buildup...and it left a black stain on bottom of iron. Silver polish
removed most of it. Finally switched to newer iron and gave away the old one.
Beginning to think it was a mistake. New, lighter weight one doesn't do as
good a job.
