Dear Sirs.

I am building a high-end music & movies room of 14.1 (w) x 22.3 (l) x 8.2 ft
(h).I want to use 5 identical speakers, and a ceiling mounted CRT projector
(the DWIN with the Transcanner is currenly my primary choice). I am looking
at a permanenly mounted 16:9 screen of 100" diagonal. With speakers that are
46" tall, it means that the screen will have to extend all the way up to the
ceiling.

Is this possible, or is there a minimum spacing between the ceiling and top
end of the screen ? I am reluctant at using a smaller center speaker, as I
would like to use 5 identical speakers.

Comments ?

Thanx and regards,

You want to be careful not to have the screen too high because you'll end up
having to look up at the movie instead of staight ahead. This can be
uncomfortable for a long movie unless you have recliners or some other
seating arrangement that makes this more natural.

There are a number of good home theater speaker systems that have
timber-matched center speakers designed to sit under the screen. I have the
Revel Studios for L+R and Revel Voice for the center channel and it is very
hard to tell the difference as test sounds go from L to C to R.

Another option is to use an acoustically transparent screen with the speaker
behind. I believe Stewart and DaLite both make screens designed for this.
You give up a little screen gain and I expect you give up a little in
acoustic transparency (I haven't actually AB'ed this myself), but if you're
really set on identical speakers, this might be an option.

You might also consider a smaller screen. I'm using a 72" wide 16:9 screen
which seems plenty big and delivers a much better picture (brighter and
sharper) than a larger screen with the same projector/processor.

Superb choice! (You going with the 500 or new HDP700?) A high light,
compact, scaleable, SILENT projector.

I think more critical is the angle to the viewing position - if the
screen is high that will be more of an issue than proximity to the roof
line. This will also play a role in the screen type you choose.

Good choice - but also make sure they are on the same linear plane with
tweeters in alignement (requiring a centre speaker BEHIND your screen).
Stewart make a perforated audio transparent screen.

Here are some acoustically sound room ratios to help with your building:

Height Width Length

1.00 1.14 1.39
1.00 1.28 1.54
1.00 1.60 2.33

Hope this helps

John Please tell me more about the DWIN.

It seems to be a projector that damn near does it all and yet everyone
talks Barco, Sony, Seleco and Vidikron - and yet at the 1998 US Hi-Fi
show it was the DWIN HDP500 that got the raves.

IMHO a 46" floorstanding speaker will
certainly provide alot of bass,"maybe to
much". You may find the "Small" setting
on your processor will provide a much
clearer dialog (most important part of its
duties)Having the "large"setting may
introduce "chestiness" in male voices
and coloration in female voices.
I started with all Large settings and
found a small setting on the center
(Paradigm Reference 450) provides
a much better low volume dialog
and still provides an adequate low
end when addressed.
Have fun, experiment, see if you
can borrow a small center speaker.

I support your decision to run a full range (identical) center - I did
the same. In my theater the screen hangs only about 3 inches from the
ceiling - I have had no problems with this. From the seating position
you feel like you are about mid-theater (i.e. having to look up a bit,
but not the stiff-neck seats down front...).

If I had everything I wanted I would have put the screen down a bit
and used a perforated screen and put the speakers behind it, but that
meant a low gain screen and wasn't practical for me - it may be an
option for you for cosmetics.

Cheers.
