I'm looking at the Boston VR950 as main front speakers in a
$1500-$2000 speaker setup for home theater. I've compared them to the
Paradigm Mini Monitors and Paradigm Studio/20s, and to my ear they sound
close to, but a little more "alive" than the Studio/20s. Classical and
swing music sounded better on the Bostons, while male and female vocals
sounded marginally better (warmer) on the Studio/20s. They are priced
about the same as the Studio/20s. Unfortunately, the two brands are
sold at different stores, so I can't do an A/B comparo.

Any opinions on the reputation of Boston Acoustics? It's been
almost 15 years since I last purchased speakers, and I've pretty much
been out of the loop on this stuff.

I think Boston has some of the best "bang for the buck" speakers out
there. I've got a set of VR30's with a VR12 Center and VRS surrounds
and they sound very tasty indeed. The VR30's are also very musical but
I listen mostly to HT. If they sound good to you then buy them with
confidence. Boston makes quality speakers at a good price.

I think that that is due to a moderately exaggerated
treble.

What Boston speakers does your friend have? Mine are not ear
piercing at all.

Thanks.

I like Paradigms as well, but it sounds to me that
your friend's system may not be optimally configured
and/or placed.

OK for mid-fi sound. Rising treble response, limited ultimate loudness, not
much bass extension. But smooth and beautiful appearance.
