The components I'm looking to get are:
Pioneer Elite VSX37THX Ultra THX Reciever
M&K 5000THX Ultra THX Speaker System
Pioneer Elite DV05 THX DVD Player
Vidikron Vision Three Home Projection System
106" Movie Screen
Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of these products? Or products
that may be better?
Thanks.

If you going to drop that much coin on a projector that good, you
might want to consider going with something better than a receiver
to drive the audio side. Also, for a screen that size you had
better look into a progressive scan DVD player. If you do not
intend to ONLY use DVD as a source, you should probably also
consider the need to have a scaler of some sort, like the Runco
4404 or perhaps something cheaper, but with similar capabilities.
You don't mention it specifically, but hopefully you are not
going with a 4:3 aspect screen, but a 1.85:1 or 1.78:1, particularly
if you plan to add HDTV in the future, or watch a lot of widescreen
movies. Hopefully the room you are putting the projector in is
either windowless or can be blacked out effectively. Otherwise
you may not get the brightness you desire.
I suggest listening to something as lively as Saving Private Ryan
with the M&K's at high volume levels (close to theatrical settings)
before making your final decision on them.
You don't mention the size of the room, that should have a lot
to do with what you select for speakers, as well as amplifier
power.

It's not out yet, but it sounds as if the Toshiba 9200 may be even
better than the H-1000 if you can wait a few more months to get one.

This is EXACTLY what I was going to say (except I was going to say "money"
instead of "coin.")
The quality level of your intended projection system is in a whole different
ballpark compared to the audio system you're looking at. You should
absolutely consider going with a separate processor and separate amps (along
with a separate tuner if necessary.) You not only gain higher quality, but
vastly superior upgrade capability as well.

I don't want to get rid of the THX label. If I'm paying a little more
for a label, that's okay with me at this time. I just want to make
sure that I can get the highest quality picture and the highest quality
sound within my budget.
My room size is Height: 7', Width: 15', Length: 20'. There is a window
in the room, but I have "knockout" blinds installed (same blinds used
by photographer dark rooms).
I have approximately: $15,000 to budget (I can go over by a few
thousand if need be, but perfer to stay under).
Pioneer Elite VSX37THX Ultra THX Receiver - $1,900.00
M&K S-150THX Front Speakers - $1,699.00 pair
M&K S-150ACTHX Center Speaker - $850.00
M&K SS-150THX Surround Speaker - $1,199.00 pair
M&K MX-150THX Subwoofer - $1,350.00
Runco CinemaPro 770 - $5,995.00
ProScreen Mercury 106" - $555.00
I'm new to this whole process, but M&K speakers was recommended as top
quality speakers to me by a THX enthusaist.
I thought about Revel brand, but I'm not sure what speaker set to get.
Are there any recommendations to this system that you would make, and
stay under $15,000.
Also, do I need a line doubler of some sorts when I use a front project
system?
Thanks.

You are contradicting yourself here. You say you want THX, but then you say
you want the highest quality sound you can get...which is it? You can get
the THX sticker on M&K, but you will get a far better sound out of B&W,
Paradigm, Dunlavy, Theil, or other higher end speakers. THX speakers are NOT
made for music.
THX does not guarantee that. It guarantees that it conforms to a minimum
level of broadly defined quality appropriate mainly for ProLogic audio
10 years ago. It has nothing about "the best" in it, it is primarily a
marketing program to make end users believe exactly what you have stated
above as fact. The finest equipment is not THX logo'd. To that part of
the market, THX certification would be embarrassing.

Not ideal dimensions, particularly the ceiling height. Are planning
to mount the projector on the floor instead of the ceiling? How many
seating positions are you going to use. Btw, unless you are going to
use existing couches or sectionals, you've left that out of your budget.

Add budget for cables, speaker wire, acoustic treatments (likely to be
substantial with the room dimensions above), CD, DVD, VHS, Satellite
sources, surge suppression, lighting control, etc.
> I'm new to this whole process, but M&K speakers was recommended as top

Makes sense given the source. I encourage you to listen to some of
the alternatives before making your final decision. You may find that
the M&K presentation is not what you are looking for. Again, non-THX
products are quite often far better choices than those with the magic
logo.
> I thought about Revel brand, but I'm not sure what speaker set to get.
Difficult to fit Revel into the budget you have defined above.

If you go with a progressive scan DVD player, and intend to use no
other source material, then you could get by without it. Otherwise
you will need one. The bigger the screen, the more critical its quality
becomes.

Yes, so forget DVD players and get a good PC set up for HT, and a
Davis S8 projector. Use a good 16x9 ratio screen (so you can mask in
both directions for optimum picture quality in 4x3 and 2.35:1) and
match up with the new Denon 5800 THX EX electronics - with something
like a Rotel RB-971 to handle the rear power.
Speakers could be several flavours, but do not buy without hearing B&W
LCR6 all round (that's seven speakers) plus a Paradigm Servo-15 sub.
This should easily come within your budget, and you'll love the
quality of both vision and sound! A full THX speaker system *may* be
to your liking, but will probably not be the most cost-effective
solution in your relatively small room

Yes you can! All you have to do is listen to Dunlavy, B&W, Thiel, PSB,
Paradigm, Hales, Martin Logan, and a slew of other speaker products.
M&K are mediocre. Only those who think Bose are good like the M&K's.

DTV-Runco VX-101c Front Projector - $11,000.00
Da-Lite 106" Screen w/motor - $1,800.00
Sony STRDA777ES Receiver/Amp - $1,500.00
B&W DM602 Front Left/Right w/Stands - $700.00 pair
B&W DM601 Rear Surround w/Stands - $550.00 pair
B&W LCR6S2 Center w/stands - $600.00
B&W SPLI1000 Subwoofer - $1,000.00
Sony DVDS7700 - $1,000.00
Cables - Estimate - $650.00
Total: $18,000.00 (still approx. $2,000 under budget)
However, I'm thinking, but not solid about this yet, of switching the
B&W DM602 to Surround Speakers, and making the B&W DM604S2 as the Front
speakers.
Increases total to: $19,850 (still approx. $150 under budget)
After Tax (in my state): $21,140.25
The Runco representative here as offered to caliburate and align the
Runco projector for free, and the installers are $800 per day.
The correct dimentions of my room are. Height: 9', Width: 15', Length:
20'.
Getting better or getting worse? Anyone got any advice on making this
a solid system for less money?
The key components I want to keep are front projection with HDTV and at
least 100" screen. I know the projector is taking the biggest chunk of
my budget... but it's something I want for that "theater" experience.
Thanks for all the advice thus far. :) It's been helpful.

I am not alone in my opinion that Psb, Paradigm, B&W, and others are
superior speakers to the M&K THX system.
Before shelling out that kind of dough, go to other places and LISTEN and
not to just THX equipment. Would you buy Bose? If your answer is no, they
have the widest known name in audio, but it is the major consensus that
superior, less expensive alternatives exist and are easy to find. THX is a
name and marketing term to make money for them from the manufacturers.
Someone made a comment about the Highlander DVD being THX certified, but the
quality sucks, yet many of the reference quality DVD's do not carry the THX
logo.

An improvement over the first iteration. You still haven't
explicitly stated what aspect ratio, I hope you decide to
go with 1.78 or 1.85 instead of 4:3.
> Sony STRDA777ES Receiver/Amp - $1,500.00
Given your other choices, I still feel like you are going to
regret going with a receiver in the long run. But, you're
definitely headed in the right direction with the next part...

Huge improvement, as you obviously have already figured out
for yourself.
> Sony DVDS7700 - $1,000.00
This might be your biggest mistake for now. I still think
you should seriously consider a progressive scan DVD player,
probably one from Toshiba (good value) or the Panasonic (pricey).
> The Runco representative here as offered to caliburate and align the

Well, considering there is a hideous margin on the Runco (ask me
how I know), that's no big sacrifice. I'm not 100% sure, but I
believe if you want to be a Runco dealer, you HAVE to do the
initial setup. He may just be blowing smoke...
Btw, I sure hope you're getting some sort of package deal on
the equipment, particularly if you're buying it all from the
same outfit. Something on the order of 20-30% off retail or
MSRP as a starting point seems reasonable.

I'm glad you got the extra ceiling room, 7' seemed short before.

True. Not much way around it, unless you go with a more affordable
brand, like Dwin or Seleco perhaps. You're still missing that
line doubler, particularly if you stick with the 7700 DVD.

I honestly think you'd be much happier going with separates -- I think
you'll find that the vast majority of Home Theater enthusiasts wouldn't even
consider a receiver if they had your budget.

I'm curious, why did you change your choice of projector and screen
since your last post?
Camfella
The CinemaPro770 doesn't support HDTV, it can not use doublers or
scalers. It's scan rate is very low, I can't remember off hand. The
VX-101c, has a built in scaler as well as HDTV.
Although, HDTV hasn't hit the market in my area yet, I still want th
feature so that when HDTV becomes popular, I don't have to upgrade my
$11,000 piece of equpiment again.
thanks.
What do you suggest? In the price range ($1,500.00) what can I get
that would be good quality and make the speakers be worthy of the sound
they recieve?

I did not say M&K makes the worlds best speakers.
I did a great deal of research to find the right speakers for my dedicated home
theater and chose M&K. I think the THX Certified M&K speakers are the best
value for a dedicated home theater installation.
Remember, M&K THX Certified home theater are professional level components that
require proper room acoustics to perform properly.
Because M&K's are premimum priced pro products the are out of the mainstream
price point. I advise my clients to invest in the best speakers for their
needs because speakers do not change much over time ( I do not sell M&K BTW).

projector (JVC or Dukane). Head over to www.avsforum.com and go to the
DLP/LCD/D-ILA projector area for tons and tons of info.
For much less money ($5k-8k), there are also plenty of DLP projectors
which are pretty extraordinary these days. The forums mentioned above
will give you more information than you could ever dream of.
> Da-Lite 106" Screen w/motor - $1,800.00
What screen material?
> Sony STRDA777ES Receiver/Amp - $1,500.00
Um, no. :-) This is a huge mistake. Look at Marantz, Denon, Nakamichi,
NAD in this price range.
> B&W DM602 Front Left/Right w/Stands - $700.00 pair
> B&W DM601 Rear Surround w/Stands - $550.00 pair
> B&W LCR6S2 Center w/stands - $600.00
> B&W SPLI1000 Subwoofer - $1,000.00
B&W is cool, but do you really want to spend more on your sub than your
fronts? Seems horribly unbalanced, especially if you want to be
listening to music in this same room.
> Sony DVDS7700 - $1,000.00
As mentioned by others, you simply *must* get a progressive-scan DVD
player. The difference in quality is staggering.
You could also get a DVDO iScan line-doubler or a CrystalImage Scaler,
or if you want the ultimate in quality (and hassle) a Home Theater
Computer (there is another forum on www.avsforum.com for these as well)
> Cables - Estimate - $650.00
I wouldnt spend more than this, perhaps even less. In fact, as Nigel
and others have advocated around here, why not take all this money and
invest it in acoustic treatments for the room instead. You'll get FAR
FAR FAR more return for your money.
Andy K.
I hardly ever hear of somebody buying them on thier own or extolling
the virtues of them, so I have to assume that they are not in
the 'choice when money is no object' class...

This is totally different -- "Best value" is not the same as "can't beat
them". Unfortunately, I still disagree with your conclusion. Fortunately,
that is why everyone gets to choose their own components.
> Remember, M&K THX Certified home theater are professional level components that
> require proper room acoustics to perform properly.
No they are not. They are cheap drivers in a simple box that is not
particularly dense (not so good for sound). After installation, drivers are
often replaced by PROFESSIONAL installers to make them sound better along
with crossover changes when necessary.
> Because M&K's are premimum priced pro products the are out of the mainstream

This half wrong (pro products) and half right (out of the mainstream price
point). This is 95% of the reasoning behind why some people do not care for
them. They cost too much for what you get. At half their price, with the
selection of a suitable dark amp to drive them, they might be worthwhile.
> I advise my clients to invest in the best speakers for their

Sure we believe you... :-)
The only reason McCarty hasn't screamed at you about using the newsgroup for
promoting sales is because he likes M&K. If you dealt anything else, we
would be all over you by now.
> Irv Kelman
> We are THX Certified.
(How embarrassing)
Well, it's going to be hard to hand on to that price point and still
go with separate components. You might want to consider how much it
might save in the long run. As you probably know, sound formats change
about as often as the weather lately. Having to replace that $1500
receiver every time to get the latest/greatest can become expensive.
If you just upgrade or replace a preamp and leave the amplifier alone
you may come out ahead over time, plus potential sonic improvements.

The Panasonic H-1000 looks like the best one out right now, but it
is about $1800. The Toshiba 5109 is around $500 and pretty darn close
to it. I'm planning to wait for the next generation Toshiba to come
out (9200) which should perform even better than the Panasonic. It
is due in August I believe. Street price will probably be around $1000,
but I'm not sure on that. Bang for the buck, the 5109 is a great deal.

Absolutely. Since you're paying sales tax, start telling how you can
get a lot of this equipment (receiver, DVD, cables) on the web and save
a lot of money. He should see the light...
Thanks. I'm going to bring this up that I can buy most, if not all, of
this equipment cheaper on the web (which I can, cause I've looked at
prices).
Gotta question though, if he doesn't discount the equipment but drops
the installation fees, is that still worth it? I'm spending around
$19,500.00 ... which according to the salesperson is way over
the "average" amount they sell there.
I'd perfer to get 20%-30% off than installation... but...
Also, the room that this is system is going has concrete floors. The
seating will in the center of the room, how can I get the speakers near
the seating without having wires show? Do I need to build a sub-floor
or something... or, do they run the wiring under the padding of the
carpet and create a hole in the desired location?
>
> Given the wide variations in speakers, there isn't any "BEST". "You can't

Actually, M&K is is the first tier of 'sorry sounding shit'.
I think they have a lot of freebie mar-com handouts that extoll how
wonderful they are, and they aren't cheap with them. Dealers love to
be able to drop glossy color crap in your lap on your way out the
door. They are relatively expensive, yet not so high as to be a
low volume product line. So, higher volume, better inventory
management, lower overall costs per unit, translates to better
margins. Dealers also like using the exact same components over and
over again. No changes, no surprises. You can find a local cabinet
maker to build enclosures without having to worry about one-off
measurements every time. You can probably even get volume discounts
that way, all the while your customer is thinking that you're providing
them with a unique, custom installation. You see the same thing with
audio components. So, you come up with a low-end package, a mid-range
package and a high-end package to hit various price points. You convince
each customer that it is custom-designed to fit their needs. They don't
know any better.
Next, if you can convince the customer that he really NEEDS the THX
gizmoids, then he can't just run down the road to Best Buy and set it
up himself. So, that makes sure you don't spend your time teaching
the guy what to buy cheaper somewhere else that only has high school
dropouts working there. For the THX speakers available, M&K is probably
the highest margin sale they can make and keep their THX rating.
A lot of those installs have M&K cabinets with replacement drivers
installed in them to make them sound better.
Here is something on the THX website that I think is totally stupid. Now we
have to calibrate our system for each movie? This is ridiculous. I have
calibrated my system with Video Essentials and a Radio Shack SPL meter and
have no need to recalibrate it for each new DVD that makes use of this.
http://www.thx.com/press/optimode.html
I see you pray to the almighty Lucas and his THX throne. Yes, THX has done
some good things to HT, but it is not the nirvana for HT.
It suggests dipole surrounds which I think mess up the directionality of
digital 5.1 vs. direct radiating. With discrete 5.1 channels, why do we
need something that will disperse the sound? Hell, we should use dipoles
for the fronts as well then so it doesn't get too localized... (sic)
"Wide Horizontal Dispersion in THX Front Speakers gives you the optimum
sound localization wherever you're sitting " - sounds like a Bose 901 to me.
I rather accuracy of the imaging not spreading it out all over the place.
There are many speakers that have a wide horizontal dispersion without
loosing the accurate imaging. Maggies are a very good example that are not
THX certified. They don't make the soundstage or image something that it is
not.
"THX Subwoofers are designed to deliver the most powerful bass performance
from your Home Theatre System. " - I have heard some incredible subs that
are not THX and have amazing bass, like the high end Velodynes.
Re-EQ is available on alot of non-THX systems including my older Denon as is
the bass management - even on cheapo 5.1 receivers.
"Timbre MatchingTmatches the tone of your front speakers to your surrounds
to compensate for the fact that only two surround speakers are used in a
typical Home Theatre system instead of a full array as in a movie theatre.
" - you instead buy timbre matched speakers and what does timbre matching
have to do with 2 surround speakers replacing a "full array" of speakers -
they have nothing to do with each other.
How about THX certified speaker cable!!! Now the on-going argument of cable
quality is bad enough, but a THX certification on it???? This can only be
marketing - PLEASE!
"Together, they have created the highest quality audio systems that deliver
the most comprehensive set of standards for performance, innovative
technology and best overall value. " - highest quality audio and best
overall value? I have heard TONS of non-THX products that are superior to
THX in audio quality and best overall value? Pay a good sized premium for a
silly logo?
"Great product performance is matched only by the ease of setup.
Installation of your
THX Home Theatre is often this simple
Choose where to put your THX Certified products
Put them in place
Set the equipment to THX suggested levels " - so they are saying that
THX solves all the problems of different room sizes, room acoustics, speaker
placement, etc. with varied equipment and all types of rooms - AMAZING!!!
(sic)
The above are quotes from the THX website that I find ridiculous and
sometimes contradictory.

I suppose it depends. What percentage of the total are the installation
fees? Sometimes they cram a ton of stuff into the "install" budget,
hundreds of hours of projector setup, wiring, tuning, etc. I still think
at least 15% of the total is a reasonable expectation, even with very
lean install fees. Your mileage may vary...
> Also, the room that this is system is going has concrete floors.
Bzzt. Mistake. Consider the option of floating a couple layers of
plywood over the slab (floating, not attached to the side walls or
the concrete directly) to help soften up that surface some. Put
as much pad and heavy carpet over that as you can get away with for
the design.
> The seating will in the center of the room, how can I get the speakers
> near the seating without having wires show?
Most speakers, especially for HT, are designed to be placed near, on,
or in the walls. Moving them (drastically) out into the room may not
be the right approach, unless you have a very non-standard floor plan
for a theater.
> Do I need to build a sub-floor or something... or, do they run the

See above, but for hiding wires, if you must bring speakers way out
from the walls, consider some of the flat ribbon type cabling which
can be placed behind baseboard trim.
Very good estimate Randy. Typically, we spec 10% to 15% and that is an
industry average - naturally it depends on the job (A Runco 1100 needs a
wee bit more tweaking than a Dreamvision!).

Sorry, I should have been more clear since some of you are
clearly not that knowledgeable with this type of thing.
What I mean is that it is not nailed or otherwise directly coupled
to the framing for the room, or sheetrock. It is laid directly on
the slab, usually with two layers so that they can be laid down
in two different patters, so the joints do not become a problem.
You can put a layer of heavy felt in between them to cut down on
vibration as well. The two layers screwed are screwed together,
but be careful because contracters love to try and anchor it into
the slab if you do not tell them not to. You then put your normal
carpet and pad material over the top. Try and leave a 1/4" gap around
the edge at each wall intersection. The carpet and pad will cover it
up and it will not be noticeable in the end.
So 10% - 15% sounds reasonable, I assume? The consultant will be
coming back over to my house to get a more accurate measurement of my
dedicated theater room. So, I'll talk to him about this tomorrow. :)
I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks again!

I spoke with the consultant he said that you don't need progressive-
scan DVD with this Runco projector because it comes with a high-end
Scaler (Runco scaler) built into the unit. He said, I would get no
visiable benefit with a progressive scan DVD, unless I planned to move
the DVD to a non-HDTV, regular Digital TV.

This is just estimated right now, I hope it will be much lower than
this.
Thanks!
Yes sir, Mr. Acoustic engineer sir.
Yes - They have a resolution of 1536x1024. This is enough for full
720p, and nearly enough for 1080i. BTW, there arent any TVs (Front
Projection or otherwise) that *can* fully reproduce the resolution of
1080i, except possibly for 1 or 2 $60k+ models. These D-ILAs are among
the best for screen resolution.

NAD T770.

You'll still get a ton of bass if you put the money into quality front
channel speakers. You may not get horribly *unbalanced* bass, but of
course thats not what youre after, right? :-)

Internal Scalers are never as good as a progressive-scan player will
be, unless they have Faroudja-technology internal scalers (which Runco
may in fact have, I'm not sure)

I've been trying to get Cate to stop hiding behind her computer and deal

her boyfriend Chuck Stroud who apparently is behind all these illegal
activities.
Cate knows about these problems but continues to protect this lowlife.
