I was just comparison shopping, and wondering if any has
any opinions contrasting the:
Sony 36" WEGA XBR400
Panasonic 36" Tau Pureflat
Samsung 36" Tantus

I have the XBR400 (32", but it's the same otherwise), and I love it--a
fantastic TV. IMO, this TV has the best line-doubler (Sony calls it DRC)
I've seen in a direct-view TV (although the Loewe might be as good--I didn't
really study that one enough to compare to the Sony).

I haven't seen the Panasonic (is it even out yet?), so I can't compare it
but I imagine it's a respectable competitor for the XBR400. I don't know how
to disable Panasonic's outrageous red-push (which is even worse than
Sony's), so I've shied away from Panasonic in general. However, I would
imagine there are people who do know how to disable the red-push, so this
isn't a show stopper.

I haven't seen the 36" Tantus, but I have seen the 27" and their 16:9 model
(30" or 34"? I'm not sure). Both were showing regular NTSC signals and
looked like *complete* and *total* crap. It is clear that the line doubler
in these sets is pitiful. The picture looked like it was being shown on a
computer in 256 colors and motion artifacts were apparent everywhere. If the
36" model is anything like these other two I've seen, stay far, far away.

I don't know if the Panasonic or Samsung have an anamorphic squeeze feature
(the Panasonic probably will, since they had it on their XF55/56 sets). The
XBR400 is just about as good as a direct-view gets when watching an
anamorphic DVD.
