I'm looking for a 55"+ Sony RPTV. I see that the XBR's are much more
expensive than the Sony Videoscope models. Does anyone know what the main
differences are?

Any comments will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Sy

Sony makes 3 levels of TV's. First is the "S" series. This is the same
kind of mainstream consumer junk
you buy at costco or k-mart. Next is the "V" series. The v series has
better comb filters, bigger power supplies
better color decoders, first surface mirrors and a protective coating of
iridium on the cathode components to help
maintain crt output throughout the life of the tv. The XBR series is an
NTSC hybrid television. Sony is trying to pass these
tv's off as HDTV or HDTV "like". They are neither. They have a device in
them called a scaler. The simple explanation of the
function of this device is that it quadruples the number of pixels provided
by the source device. IE: a DVD player
produces a picture with approx. 314,000 pixels on a normal tv set. The
XBR's scaler up converts this to
about 1.2 million pixels. The down side to this is that for about the same
money you could get a Mitsubishi
that does the same trick AND can display a full 2.2 million pixel HDTV
picture! Forget the sony. Definitely forget
the Hitachi (wimpy power supply, no protective coating on the cathode, etc.)
and get yourself a Mitsubishi.

To my understanding the XBR's have a different way of processing the
video signal than conventional videoscopes. I myself have a 50"
Hitachi Ultravision that I am currently watching as I am typing this
letter that I would not give up for a Sony any day! Also another big
difference is the huge price jump from the "V" to the XBR. I would
recommend you take a look at the Super Ultravisions before you make
your purchase. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. Is it called simply "Ultravision" or "Super
Ultravision".

Thanks,

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the reply but now I'm completely confused. The poster before you
was raving about the Hitachi Ultravision.

Which Mits would you recommend?
