....It could be the beginning of the REAL down-spiral of
Tom's career. ...as if it hasn't been spiralling downwards for
years....

rumored to be the most expensive movie ever made, at about $230 to $300
million dollars-- and already feared to be a massive, massive disaster
of a film, this might explain Tom's weird behavior recently.

mini-review:

http://www.tinyurl.com/74v73

"What has happened to Tom Cruise? He can't act his way out of a
paper-bag anymore and this movie is a shining example. I had the
privilege of seeing this at a friend's place who is a critic. While he
is bound by NDA, I am not.

The first look at the aliens is somewhat humorous but the movie is all
downhill from there. It's no better than any other 'end of the world'
or 'alien invasion' movie and barely lives up to the original. Clearly
this movie is a formulaic attempt at quick and dirty money in the film
industry.

Avoid at all costs."

it's really too bad, because he was excellent in Eyes Wide Shut, Magnolia
and Collateral.

Hmm, it's weird that when you go to IMDB and look at the reviews, but
not through the google cache, this review isn't there anymore....

I don't think WOTW costs that much, I thought it was between $130 -
$170m but with marketing, it could enter $200m.

I don't understand why this film was remade since Mel Gibson
essentially covered very similar ground a few years ago.

In Eyes he delivered a remarkably lackluster performance.

Tom Cruise is a movie star. He's not a great actor. Just like Brad Pitt,
Mel Gibson, and a host of others. All pretty boys (aging pretty boys now)
with some supposed "star quality" that I've never been able to fathom. I'll
go see a movie just because it has Ed Harris in it, or Gene Hackman, or
(until this month) Michael Caine. Movies with Pitt or Gibson or Cruise,
I've learned to avoid.

The review isn't there anymore because it's a fake review. The makers
and fans of a sh*tty little direct-to-video movie have a huge vendetta
against the Spielberg movie simply because it got a theatrical release.

The reviews coming out of the premieres have all said Cruise is really
great in it. So, he may be a total nutjob in real life but evidently
he's good in the movie. That's what Stern said too.

I agree strongly. These guys star in films because the public seems to
love them, not because they are great actors. I would add Jason
Isaacs, Catherine Keener, John Malkovich (I saw him in a French film
recently and he was just amazing, apparently he speaks French well
enough to play someone from there and has done so several times) and
well, there are a great number of actors and actresses who are far
better at acting than the ones we get starring over and over. I seek
out the great actors/actresses and ignore most films that insist on
starring very famous personalities instead of talent.

I don't know.

I saw him in "A Few Good Men" yesterday and I think he has the ability.

He seems to self-controlled.

Maybe he just needs to relax a bit......

Good movie. remember that he played a military lawyer. Military /

I agree. Take Pitt for instance. I think he feels like a phony in a
way. He's got a big bank account, plenty of media hype, gorgous wife
and/or girlfriend, but he knows it's not related to his talent as an
actor. I read where Bravo's "Inside the Actors Studio" wanted him on
this year but he declined because the body of his work did not warrent
it.

See it. Batman is enjoyable. Christian Bale is an amazing actor; he really
is. Non-talented actors like Katie Holmes become watchable in his presence
(it's amazing how Bale's presence in a scene makes everyone better!) and
when he is paired with Michael Caine or Gary Oldman, it's heaven.

I liked Pitt's performance in A River Runs Through It, 12 Monkeys and
Kalifornia. In Kalifornia, he was so ugly and disgusting, you wouldn't
even know it was him. He was just great in that. I think he just
needs some encouragement to avoid slick movies and to make one that
isn't dependent on his looks. The movies he's making these days, like
Oceans this and that, Troy and the Smith movie, are fluffy.

His erstwhile better half probably carried him. She's got comic talent.

Also, as usual, he relied on his looks and image to get him by. At the
time there was the predictable clamor and slavering over him and the
ratings for a supposedly "Must See" TV event.

I think Bale would have made a better Aviator than DiCaprio. Holmes
was put in the film obviously as a favor to someone. No way in
Gotham/NYC you're a Asst. DA and talk as if you're still playing with
dolls in a what is essentially a man's field.

But I'm not seeing WOW cause I'm tired of Speilberg and his obsession
with saving children. This adapation involves saving a little blonde
girl like Jurassaic Park I and II, Temple of Doom etc. I'm sick of
tired of it. Chidren will get killed if alien invasion happens don't
fool yourselves. And don't expect adults to care about kids when
something as drastic as that happens. In real life parents wouldbe
panicking saying stuff to the kids like ...shut up, stay over here, be
quiet, do as I say, stop crying, you want your butt whipped? then shut
up.. etc.

I've heard about the critics that are payed by the studios to write
reviews but that's not all critics by any means, it's just a sub-group.
Critics have panned Speilberg before (I think AI), no one felt like
they had to give him a rave. I don't think the official reviews will
be out until it officially opens. However if the people that have seen
it already, liked it, that wouldn't be farfetched. Afterall Speilberg
is a really good filmaker and alot of people like Tom Cruise acting.

I loved him in Empire of the Sun, Henry V (small role, still very moving),
Little Women, Velvet Goldmine, etc. You REALLY should see Empire of the
Sun. He is only about 12 or 13 in that, and he is brilliant. He grew up to
be incredibly hot -- it's not his fault he and Holmes have no chemistry.
