I have a theory that every era, there are two actors who are extremely
similar. They go for the same roles, look alike and are _almost_ never in the
same movie together. Roughly the same ethnic background, the same vibe,
the same age.

Here's my list.

James Cagney - Mickey Rooney
(Any 1930s gangster movie)

Lee Marvin - James Coburn
(Any war WWII movie you can think of)

Dustin Hoffman - Al Pacino
(Dog Day Afternoon could have been cast either way?)

David Strathairn - David Garrison

Nick Nolte - Gary Busey
(Who'll Stop The Rain)

James Spader - Eric Stolz

Tom Cruise - Charlie Sheen
(Born On The 4th Of July, taking over where Charlie left off in Platoon)

Jill Hennessy - Kim Delaney

Erika Christensen - Julia Styles (Wicked had Erika written all over it)

Just my musings,

Alex

I would add:
Spencer Tracy and -- well, now I can't think of his name -- just saw him in
an old film the other day -- looked just like Tracey and was around at the
same time -- Whitman? C'mon, somebody knows!

Also, James Mason and Richard Basehart. Maybe it's just me.

Thanks - I couldn't imagine a resemblance between Stuart
Whitman and Spencer Tracy, but James Whitmore, yes,
they could be brothers.

I really can't see Spencer doing "Black Like Me" though!

Or commercials for gardening supplements, for that matter.

That's a good one! I never thought of the similarity before,
but you're right, Julianne and Gillian could switch roles.

Ellen Barkin has always reminded me of Angie Dickinson,
though they're not the same age.

Can anyone think of a twin for Jeff Goldblum? Chris Kattan
is sort of his type (at least in the House on Haunted Hill
remake).

What about male/female twins? E.g., Jeff Goldblum and
Illeana Douglas. ...Others?

Brendan Fehr, imo, could fill in as a young Harrison Ford
in flashbacks if needed.

Also the "Happy Days" dad, John Bosley, and the character who played
Bosley on Charlies Angels.

How about:

Julianne Moore - Jorja Fox (CSI)

Judd Hirsch (Taxi)?

Of course, that would be David Doyle.

Here's some more.

Bill Murray - James Belushi

Bruce Willis - Scott Bakula
(although they were in Color Of Night together)

Charles Dance - Tim Pigott-Smith
(They were in Jewel In The Crown, but it seems like
they had switched parts on purpose)

Arnold Schwarzenegger - Brian Thompson
(The Terminator vs. the Alien Hitman from the X-Files)

Ellen Barkin looks a lot like Angela Dohrmann ("Donna Chang"
in the Seinfeld episode "The Chinese Woman").

More of the "squint and mix them up" brigade.

Carrey-Anne Moss - Lisa Zane - Bebe Neuwirth

How's that for triplets.

Now that he's a little older. However, back in the eighties:

Laurence Fishburne - Tony Todd

> Daniel Day Lewis and Jeremy Irons

Matthew Modine - Matthew McConaughey

Richard Burton - Anthony Hopkins
(Especially when Hopkins was younger)

Eddie Murphy Chris Tucker

Sharon Stone Melanie Griffith

Tcheky Kayro Jurgen Prochnow

Michael Douglas Kurt Russell Harrison Ford
(imagine AIR FORCE ONE with Douglas as the Russian villain, Russell in
the Bill Macy role and Costner as the Mole. A better movie, I think.)

That one I agree with wholeheartedly. They always play the
foreign/French/East European villain as well.

Kurt Russell - Patrick Swayze

Johnny Depp - Skeet Ulrich

Joshua Jackson - Devon Sawa
(The Skulls versus Final Destination)

Chris Rock. But only because they're both called Chris.
(He's the funniest of all three.)
