dug the set out of the garage after years of storage. various spots
on the rails, corrosion I suspect. Cars run but randomly stop on the
track, and sometimes go around with no problem.

going to vacuum the track and wipe down the rails. maybe use some
2000 grit paper on the bad areas of the track?

Cleaners to use - can I wipe down the tracks with Windex? or should
liquids be kept away.

thx all for any tips.

do not sand them ! the rails are coated with stainless steel over normal steel and if you sand them, it will remove the coating and begin to rust. If there is rust, you cant really fix it, but you could try some INOX on it https://www.amazon.com/Inox-Injector-4-Oz/dp/B000GPZTJ6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1522930540&sr=8-3&keywords=Inox+Lubricant+Injector&dpID=31s-CN8nyIL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch
