How many impactful military leaders have died as a result
of wayward attacks from their own side?
The Confederates,for example,lost A.S. Johnston and Stonewall
Jackson just in the first years of the Civil War.
Who else would have been consequential had their subordinates
had better targeting intel?

Jackson, yes, but I have never seen any claim or suggestion

He was hit from behind (while not facing his army)
by a bullet of a type his army had and the Union didn't.

There were rumors that Charles XII of Sweden was killed by

during the opening phase of Operation COBRA.

the wrong target.
While commanding a front-line battalion in WW I,
Winston Churchill several times personally
reconnoitered enemy positions; his men were warned
not to fire on anything till he got back.
