Hey folks.....
I've often wondered if there was anything in Titanic's specie room,
or strongroom, besides the 4 parcels of opium listed on the manifest
and the cargo loading diagram.
Now, before you all think "oh, man, not another treasure theorist", hear
me out. I've heard all the same before myself. I'm not suggesting that
she was loaded down like the Atocha,HMS Edinburough, or White Star's own
Laurentic. Royal Mail ships were often used to move gold/other national
assets between the US and Great Britan to maintain the trade balance or
pay off state-level transactions. Since these were handled by Royal
Mail, not White Star, they would not be listed on the cargo manifest,
but on the ship's mail list. The only other place that any such
transaction would be recorded would be the Bank of England, and they
seal their records for 100 years.
So, any theories? Maybe there was a down payment for new carpeting in
the embassy or something. Some gold Sovereigns or Eagles? How about
bonds?
If Titanic wasn't carrying any, anyone know what a routine load on
Olympic might have been like?
Also, what about "ship's money", whatever that is?
OK, OK, I read Serling's "Somethings Alive on the Titanic" again
recently, and it's got my mind running........

Before you buy.
Crewman Frank Prentice claimed that gold was loaded into the ships hull
at Southampton. I think he was a store keeper. He claimed this in a TV
interview many years ago. Might be wrong.
