Paine vs Washington

Hello..

From what I have recently read on this subject there is good reason to
believe Washington and others in America (AND England AND France!!)
wanted Paine dead, or, to be more accurate, to shut him the hell up about
all this reasoned democracy stuff.

Has there been any definitive historical evidence that Washington's
neglect of the imprisoned Paine was malicious, as Paine seemed to
believe, or is there another well documented explanation?
