It's pathetic that Canadian Architects in Canada remain in a Colonial state of design. I'm referring to the "temporary building" mode that gives us thousands of "tear it down" and build another temporary structure. When looking at Europe and the UK, one can only marvel at the magnificent history in architecture which lasts from generation to generation.
In my own life, here in North America, I watch as every building I ever had anything to do with, (schools, public buildings, stores) have been torn down and replaced with another temporary "modern structure". And "modern" is just another word for "temporary" in Canadian architecture. We simply have no real collection of well designed buildings which last and can be something to be proud of. Many of the structures that are being preserved are really nothing to be proud of. We are grasping at anything to hold onto. Look around you Canadians, all that you see and that which is a part of your history will be torn down, as it should be, because nothing of noteworthy value is being built.
Shall we continue to have a "log cabin" style of temporary buildings? Where are the architects who will build something beautiful? Something that will be worthy of being historical? How long will we be "Colonial settlers"?
