henry commisioned his librarian, leland to peruse and diligently
search the libraries of religious houses, make a survey and find
texts that emphasised the king's new reformation. leland set out
in 1534 but wouldn't complete it until 1543. he made copious notes
of the places he visited, their customs and the people who lived
there. his notes were collated and published in early 18th century
as leland's itinerary.
